4 Crazy Details You Need to Know About Sam Hurd's Stunning Drug Bust

Andrea Hangst

Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on federal drug charges on Wednesday night after attempting to procure 500 or more grams of cocaine from a north Texas supplier. However, the criminal complaint goes even further than that.

Hurd is alleged of being the head of an extremely high-level, big money drug dealing operation, one that raked in enough cash to support a network of associates and a fleet of vehicles, not to mention the ability to afford nearly $2 million worth of drugs per month.

There are a number of ridiculous details contained within the criminal complaint against Hurd, and in the following slides, I detail four of them.

Sam Hurd Sold a Lot of Drugs

The Chicago Bears' Sam Hurd didn't just sell drugs casually—he had a full-on drug distribution organization that moved a huge amount of product at an alarming rate.

In the criminal complaint, Hurd is alleged to have been moving a whopping four kilos of cocaine per week, but yet, that was not enough.

The undercover agent with whom he had been speaking reported that Hurd was seeking an additional five to 10 kilos of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana a week and negotiated a deal that would cost Hurd $2 million a month to acquire this much quantity.

The fact that Hurd's operation was so large-scale is mind boggling. That's a staggering amount of cocaine and pot to move on a weekly basis, and it's an extremely brazen request.

Sam Hurd Knew the Police Were onto Him but Didn't Care

Sam Hurd knew since July of 2011 that the police were onto him and his major drug distribution activities, but apparently didn't seem to care.

In July, a man with a bag containing $88,000 was pulled over by the police. The man said that both the car and the money belonged to Hurd. The car was in fact Hurd's, and Hurd even tried to get the money back from the police.

The fact that he was so daft as to not think that the bag of money would draw suspicion, or that he wouldn't get caught in spite of it, is completely ridiculous.

Sam Hurd Had a Strange Assumption About Cell Phones

Obviously, regularly conducting illegal business with the same phone or phones can quickly spell the end of whatever enterprise one is engaged in. However, Hurd wasn't so convinced of that.

He believed that as long as the cell phones came from Mexico, police in the United States couldn't track them. In fact, he even asked the undercover officer and a confidential informant if they would be able to get him such devices.

No wonder Hurd got caught; apparently smart enough to mastermind a major drug enterprise, Hurd couldn't wrap his mind around the idea that any cell phone, from anywhere, can be tracked if it's used more than once.

Hurd Isn't the Only NFL Player Involved

Another shocking allegation has surfaced about Sam Hurd's drug distribution network—that he supplied fellow NFL players with cocaine and other drugs.

According to an unnamed source, that number is in the double-digits, meaning that Hurd's arrest is just the beginning of what's bound to be a major scandal in the league in the coming days and weeks.

The list of these NFL players is in the hands of law enforcement authorities, who are no doubt about to conduct investigations of their own into these other men. Further, whoever is on this list and found to have been involved is about to be in some serious disciplinary trouble with the league.

If the source is correct, then Hurd's arrest could affect at least two teams, maybe more. Clearly, his former Dallas Cowboys and current Chicago Bears teammates are the first that come to mind as possible clients, but we as of yet do not know the extent of other players' involvement.

Once that information is released, it's going to be quite a strange and bad day for the NFL, that's certain.
