Penn State Riots: PSU Students Have Forever Shamed Their Beloved Nittany Lions

Andrew Kulha

The fanbase of Penn State University that chose to take to the streets and riot in the name of Joe Paterno has forever shamed the name of their beloved leader.

In fact, they may have forever impacted the outlook of their beloved school.

Never before in my life have I seen a reaction so despicable, especially in light of the situation at the heart of this matter.

Sure, we've seen riots before because of sporting events.

Nothing is more juvenile or stupid than burning couches, breaking windows, looting, overturning cars and whatever else happens during the course of a riot.

It's a dumb thing to do when it's for a good cause. It's an unthinkable act of selfishness in light of a sporting event.

However, what the students and fanbase of Penn State did is so unthinkable and dumb, that I highly doubt we will ever be able to part ways with this event in regards to the university.

Here is just a taste of what happened, according to foxnews.com:

Violence erupted on the campus of Penn State Wednesday night after the school's board of trustees ousted its legendary football coach and university president in the wake of a widening child sex abuse scandal.

Riot police were deployed in State College, Pa., late Wednesday as thousands of Penn State supporters vented their anger at the firing of head football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier over the school's handling of child sex abuse allegations against a former coach assistant.

At around 12:20 a.m. local time Thursday, the university issued an official police dispersal order through Facebook, warning students to vacate downtown State College immediately. It came after several violent scenes in which protesters flipped over a media van and destroyed other property.

Unfortunately, this doesn't even begin to describe the mob scene in its totality. To be fair, it's very hard to do so in words.

It's not the fact that there was violence, because that was very minimal, and it's not the fact that there was senseless abuse of property and authority.

What made the Penn State riots so unthinkable is the fact that nobody seemed to have the sense of mind to think about what they were really protesting.

When all is said and done, what got lost in the riots is the fact that, as claimed in the grand jury report, innocent lives were forever ruined and destroyed by an unthinkable act of immorality, and Paterno was in a position to do something about it.

In the end, this wasn't about Paterno, and it's sickening that the fanbase of Penn State decided to try to make it about him.

This was about right and wrong, to the deepest degree.

When the rioters decided to take to the streets, they not only spit in the faces of the alleged victims of the crimes, they shamed the man and university that they claimed to be fighting for.
