Cristiano Ronaldo and the 10 Biggest Whiners and Divers in World Football

Thomas Hallett

Cristiano Ronaldo may be playing second fiddle to Lionel Messi as the world’s best player, but the flamboyant forward leads this list of the biggest whiners and divers in world football.

For all his ability, his accolades and the draw he brings from around the world, Ronaldo possesses a darker side that we’d like to see him get rid of. The persistent diving, the complaining to referees when things don’t go his way and the his knack for going missing in big games are all reminders of why the player may not surpass Messi as the greatest player in the world.

His antics are not as consistent as they were when he first arrived at Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon, but it does not hide the fact that he is seemingly the poster boy for world football divers and whiners.

Didier Drogba

One of the more powerful strikers in world football, Didier Drogba is renowned for being extremely difficult to handle when he is at the top of his game, bullying opponents with his size and ability. But his theatrics are almost as impressive, going down under the slightest touch and rolling around in agony, which can only be seen as an embarrassment to the rest of his teammates.

A classic and hilarious confrontation with former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann saw the two big men shove each other only to simultaneously crumble to the ground. A sad reminder of the flaws of one the Premier League’s best strikers.

Sergio Busquets

I can’t think of another footballer who so actively looks to cheat his way through the game. His bust-up with Thiago Motta in the Champions League two season ago was shameful, and was possibly the deciding point for which Sergio Busquets became one of the most hated figures in world football.

Emmanuel Eboue

Emmanuel Eboue is often portrayed as a lovable cult hero to Arsenal fans, appointing himself as club cheerleader and often garnering unfounded cheers.

He did, however, shame much of his Arsenal career by throwing himself to the floor at any given chance. Rolling around the pitch, smacking the ground in apparent agony and calling over the Arsenal physio to tend to his wounds made him an incredibly frustrating figure to have in the lineup.

The running joke among football fans is that maybe he has cried wolf too often, and one day a real injury will be rubbished by medical staff not looking to fall for his old tricks.

Dani Alves

Another full-back who has a lot of talent going forward, Dani Alves is one of Barcelona’s biggest assets with his forward runs and ability to press opponents high up the field.

He does have an equally high tendency to take a tumble and further milk the dive by theatrically displaying how much pain he is in.

An ugly side to a great player and to Barcelona’s football.

David Ngog

Lee Carsley was absolutely furious with David Ngog following the tumble he took in a match between Liverpool and Birmingham City. Conning the referee into giving a penalty and awarding Liverpool all the points, it will go down as a hugely embarrassing moment in recent seasons for the club.

Steven Gerrard

People can deservedly talk highly of Steven Gerrard and all the great moments he has given the Anfield faithful while playing in a Liverpool shirt, but the sad fact is he is a cheat.

A Steven Gerrard dive in the penalty area at the Kop End has almost become the norm in big games at Anfield. And when the Liverpool captain doesn’t get what he’s looking for, a look of surprise falls across his face.

Jesus Navas

Jesus Navas is one of La Liga’s brightest stars, marauding up and down the Sevilla right-wing and playing a huge part in the successes of the club.

Sadly, the Spaniard—who could comfortably slot into the squads at Real Madrid or Barcelona—is prone to diving and seeking sympathy from the referee.

Another sad tale about the exciting winger is that he may forever be confined to the walls of the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan due to his homesickness.

Carlos Tevez

When you’re the captain of the richest club in world football and receiving unbelievable wage packages, what exactly is there to whine about?

Carlos Tevez never seems to be comfortable and content where he is, drifting from club to club and spending no longer than two years with each of his previous employers.

But this constant whining about missing family in Argentina, then flirting with a move to Italy, and refusing to be fully committed to the Manchester City cause is just getting boring.

Javier Mascherano

An incident that saw Javier Mascherano receive a red card seconds after receiving a yellow was a perfect portrayal of a player who can’t get his head straight when things don’t go his way.

Mascherano could not pull himself away from the referee in a game against Manchester United while playing for Liverpool. The Argentine saw red following constant bickering to the referee, despite his teammates pleas for calm.

Mario Balotelli

Another Manchester City forward who never seems to have his head on straight. Since his arrival in Manchester, Mario Balotelli has sounded out his displeasure at staying in the city and longs for home in Italy.

Storming down the tunnel on numerous occasions following substitutions—not to mention an incredibly funny incident with a bib—Balotelli is at home on this list of whiners and divers.
