Pac-12 Expansion: Which Teams Are Rumored to Join Pac-16?

Chris Humphrey

With the news of the newly-branded Pac-12 possibly growing to the rumored Pac-16, the state of the college football landscape has a possibility of being shaken to its core, as it was in 2010.

As Texas A&M prepares to make its bid to the SEC, the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns are the names that are being tossed around for the Pac-16, as the Big 12 is on the brink of implosion this year.

If Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott wants to get his league to the first 16-team conference in college football history, Scott will need to find two additional programs to help fill the 16-team behemoth.

Does the Pac-12 pick up where they didn’t finish last season and pick apart what is left of the Big 12 or does it look for teams closer to the West Coast? The following slide show details the best options for Larry Scott and the Pac-12’s drive to become the Pac-16 in the near future.

Texas Longhorns

Program Performance Last Decade: 106 Wins

Outside of the trouble the Longhorn Network has caused this offseason, Texas would bring arguably the most recognizable college football program in the country to the Pac-12, along with the hotbed of recruiting in the Lonestar State.

Of course, Texas Tech can also deliver that market and the big question remains is whether programs in the Pac-12 will have the same thoughts as Texas A&M and some other programs in the current Big 12 -- do they want to be at a disadvantage if Texas' Longhorn Network takes off in distribution?

It will be interesting to see how that shakes out and whether the Longhorns really are an attractive program or a pariah.

Texas Tech

Program Performance Last Decade: 86 Wins

When fans and pundits bring up the best teams in the state of Texas, the Red Raiders in Lubbock posted the third-best mark in the past decade along with the aforementioned Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs. Texas Tech has won at least eight games for the last eight years.

At this point, the Red Raiders haven't quite been as dominant in the few couple of seasons under coach Tommy Tuberville as they were in the last couple of seasons under Mike Leach.

Another question mark -- if Texas isn't an option for the Pac-12, would somebody like a Houston, with a bigger TV market, be a better choice than Texas Tech?

Oklahoma

Program Performance Last Decade: 109 Wins

The Sooners could bring even more success to the “Conference of Champions” with their history of winning that has been enjoyed in Norman, whether in the Southwest or Big 12 Conference. And that could lead to some classic battles with USC and Oregon in future years.

It's pretty much assured that OU would be No. 1 on the depth chart to leave the Big 12 if and when the Pac-12 comes calling, according to numerous reports. The New York Times noted that Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott met with the news media before Louisiana State’s game against Oregon at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday night and did not quell the Oklahoma speculation.

“Schools have reached out to us,” Scott said, declining to address Oklahoma specifically. “We are not doing anything proactively, we are not initiating anything. But schools have called us.”

Oklahoma State

Program Performance Last Decade: 75 Wins

If the Sooners make the jump from the Big 12 to the Pac-12, you are guaranteed to see the boys from Stillwater jump on the wagon out of their current conference for greener and more stable pastures, along with their rival from the Sooner State.

For no other reason, it would still be a natural fit in the Pac-12. Think about it.

USC-UCLA

Washington-Washington State.

Oregon-Oregon State.

Arizona-Arizona State.

Stanford-Cal.

And Oklahoma-Oklahoma State.

BYU

Program Performance Last Decade: 82 Wins

With the Cougars as a football independent, the Pac-12 could snatch up BYU to help balloon the conference to the desired 16-team league, gaining another football team from Utah.

BYU has been consistent for years and would more than hold its own in a revamped Pac-12. And it would make a natural travel partner with Utah, its fiercest rival. Not sure if BYU is as desirable as the other teams mentioned, and even with Utah already in the league it's not exactly a huge television market.

But geographically it fits.

Fresno State

Program Performance Last Decade: 82 Wins

Over the past decade, with the exception of the USC Trojans, the Bulldogs of Fresno State have the best winning percentage of all the California schools. While there are already four California programs in the conference, the stability of the Bulldogs has to be noticed when commissioner Larry Scott looks for new programs to join his league in the future.

But, if you're a betting person, this is the proverbial 1,000,000-to-1 shot at being invited.
