Javaris Crittenton: Troubled NBA Player's Tragic Career Ends with Murder Charges

Alex Kay

The tragic tale of Javaris Crittenton may soon be coming to a lamentable end.

The former Washington Wizard is facing a murder charge in an Atlanta shooting that left a 22-year-old woman dead and four children without a mother.

The FBI detained Crittenton in Los Angeles on Monday at approximately 8 p.m. local time, three days after a federal arrest warrant was issued.

Federal agents finally tracked Crittenton to John Wayne Airport, where he was checking in for a Delta Airlines Flight to Atlanta. He was arrested without any troubles and taken to an L.A. police station for suspicion of being a fugitive.

For now, this puts to rest the ongoing drama that stems from the August 19th murder of Jullian Jones.

Here is what we know about what happened that night and the motives for the crime:

Back in April of this year, Crittenton was robbed of jewelry.

The man that Crittenton believed committed this crime against him was walking on Macon Drive in southwest Atlanta the night of the 19th. A black Chevy Tahoe approached him and the group he was with. Shots were then fired from the vehicle. After being on the receiving end of a "hail of bullets," Jones was pronounced dead at the hospital. Meanwhile, the intended target is believed to be unscathed.

Crittenton rented the Tahoe involved in the drive-by shooting for a family member, who initially was the target of the investigation. Further details from an anonymous source later identified Crittenton himself as the triggerman, who said, "He planned to shoot the person who robbed him and missed.”

Atlanta Police Department Maj. Keith Meadows confirmed this by saying,

"It appears Mr. Crittenton observed who he thought was the perpetrator walking down the street, it so happens Miss Jones was walking down the street at the same time."

Crittenton is going to have an uphill battle when this trial goes to jury. He already made himself look bad by traveling to L.A. with a one-way ticket just days after the murder.

It also does not help that he has a previous history of menacing behavior with deadly weapons.

The former NBA player is most known for an incident back in 2009, when he was a member of the Wizards. Crittenton and the mercurial Gilbert Arenas had a major dispute over a card game on the team plane, leading to Arenas bringing in four guns to the locker room, setting them down in front of Crittenton’s locker, and leaving a sign saying "PICK 1."

Crittenton decided against using any of Gilbert’s weapons, instead pulling out his own piece. They both received season suspensions from the league and in January, Crittenton plead guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge that carried a probation penalty.

Crittenton has had trouble getting his career back on track ever since that locker room incident. He struggled to catch on with a new NBA team and had a stint in China, as well as the NBA D-League.

If he did in fact commit the crime, he will be without a doubt behind bars for a long time. It seems that the motive is there, and Crittenton is the prime suspect in this tragic slaying.

It is really sad to see someone as athletic and talented as Crittenton struggle so much in his personal life. He could have been a great player in the NBA, but his attitude and character issues held him down. We can only hope that justice is served for the children of Jones, regardless of who the gunman is.
