Mexican League 2010-2011: Cruz Azul 2-0 Atlante

Roberto Alvarez-Galloso

Cruz Azul defeated Atlante 2-0 in the Mexican League Games under heavy rain. The victory was made possible by Manuel Alejandro Vela who scored the first goal in 30 minutes after taking advantage of an opening in the goal post of the Atlante Section to score a direct kick.

The second goal was made possible by Emanuel Vila within 73 minutes under the same circumstances even though Atlante tried to deflect the ball. It appeared that the goalie was the weakest link in the Atlante team.

While heavy rains created havoc in the field and the game, Cruz Azul was able to withstand its ground with some heavy footwork and a consistency that is present every time they are on the field.

Enrique Mesa who is the coach of Cruz Azul was also impressed with how Cruz Azul was able to overcome one of the strongest elements in a game such as hard torrential rains. Mesa admitted that his team played "moderately well".

While there have been recent comments about an internal conflict in Cruz Azul, one of the players, Gonzalo Pineda, declared that the last two victories of the team has laid to rest the idea of any conflict within the team.

Atlante was a disaster in the field with a weak defense and conceding all plays and goals to Cruz Azul. Atlante has lost its two first games in the 2010 Mexican Leagues and its coach Rene Isidro Garcia talked about the need for the team to play more football/soccer.

While Cruz Azul may have a bright future in the 2010-2011 Mexican League and the CONCACAF League of Champions, Atlante has to find a way to improve its standing.
