Phillies Cheating?: There Might Be No Crying In Baseball, But Is There Cheating?

Lauren Herrold

“If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.” Right?

If you’re Mark Grace then you think that’s true.

So, were the Phillies “trying” in their recent series against the Rockies or not? I guess that depends who you ask.

The Phillies deny that they were trying to steal signs from the Colorado Rockies catcher Miguel Olivo. They say the bullpen coach, Mick Billmeyer, had binoculars out to check on Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz and how he was setting up.  According to Charlie Manuel, that’s all it was. There was no sign stealing involved.

If you ask the Rockies, they support their complaint to Major League Baseball , saying Billmeyer was relaying signs to Phillies hitters.  They have video from the FSN Rocky Mountain telecast showing Billmeyer using binoculars in the bullpen in the top of the second inning, while Shane Victorino was using the bullpen phone in the dugout.

Victorino says he was calling to tell Billmeyer to put the binoculars away.

This isn’t the first time the Phillies have been accused of sign stealing. Back in 2007 the Mets complained to MLB, accusing the Phils of using a camera in center field to relay signs to hitters. There are rumors that there were complaints again earlier this season.

According to Manuel, there will always be accusations that you’re cheating as long as you’re winning games. After all, no one wins because of skill right?

“Keep crying. I'm sure if they can steal signs, they'll steal them.“ Manuel said. “And believe we will, too, if we can get them. Yeah, we will. Legally. If you're dumb enough to let us get them, then that's your fault. That's been in the game for a long time."
