2009 WWE Slammy Awards

Jessy Morris

Yet another year is close to being over and 2009 proved to be an exciting year for WWE fans. We witnessed some great matches and great rivalries. We saw superstars returning to the WWE to the delight of the fans.

I know this may be a little bit early to do this considering the TLC event is still to come, but I may not be able to do it next week so I decided to do it now, anyway I doubt it changes at all.

2010 is coming pretty fast and it already seems that it will be a great year for all wrestling fans around the world.

Here are the winners of the 2009 awards in the WWE:

Superstar of the Year: Randy Orton

I think Orton deserves to be "Superstar of the Year" for 2009 for many different reasons. Randy won the Royal Rumble match and headlined Wrestlemania 25, sure he didn't win the title that night, but he did one month later at Backlash.

Orton was able to hold on to the title until WWE Breaking Point where he quit against John Cena. His WWE championship title reign lasted five to six months and it wasn't over as he defeated John Cena in a rematch at Hell in a Cell.

Unfortunately, that second title reign didn't last as Cena won it back at Bragging rights in an Iron man match. Since then, Randy has been involved in one of WWE's hottest rivalries of the year against Kofi Kingston, a rivalry that has kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

Who knows what these two will have in stores for each other this Sunday at TLC.

Tag Team of the Year: Chris Jericho and Big Show

When it all started at Night Of Champions, it wasn't Jericho and Big Show, it was Jericho and Edge. The WWE wanted to build a team between these two but unfortunately, Edge got injured and was sidelined. Chris Jericho decided to replace Edge with the largest athlete in the world, the Big Show.

It turned out to possibly be an even better duo then the original. Chris and Show started to be called Jerishow and just picked up from there. They have held the unified tag team titles for most of the year and are still champions as we speak. They have defeated such teams as Legacy, Cryme Tyme, The Colons, Mark Henry and MVP, and Rey Mysterio and Batista.

At TLC, that reign may finally end as Jerishow defend against DX.

Diva of the Year: Michelle McCool

Quite simply, Michelle McCool has been the dominant diva this year. She became WWE Women's champion at The Bash this year and had previously won the Diva's title in 2008. She became the first diva to hold both championships and still holds the Women's title right now.

Michelle is currently ranked No. 15 on the list of longest reigning Women's championships at 165 days and counting.

Match of the Year: The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 25 )

Most people would agree that Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, the two greatest wrestlers of all time stole the show at Wrestlemania. Some fans even say it's the greatest match in history.

When the match was officially announced for Wrestlemania 25, everybody knew these two men would put on one hell of a show. The whole match, fans and commentators where screaming and were on the edge of their seats to witness this match.

Both executed their signature moves with the other kicking out. After a little more then 30 minutes of action, Undertaker kept his undefeated streak alive by beating Shawn Michaels.

Hottest Diva of the Year: Maryse

Is there anything else to say then the name Maryse here?

She was out of action for the most part of the year and still picks up the "Hotness" trophy, that's saying a lot if you ask me. I truly believe somebody will agree with me on this one, I doubt I have to name him.

And yes, I am really happy to say that Maryse comes from my hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Rivalry of the Year: CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy

There has been some very good rivalries in the WWE this year like DX vs Legacy, Orton vs Cena and Orton vs Kingston but none stand out more then Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk for me. The rivalry began at the Extreme Rules event when Punk cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase on Jeff who has just won the title from Edge.

With Jeff Hardy being one of the most loved superstars in WWE, CM Punk became an immediate heel and prove to be great in the role. He began his straight-edge promos and attitude and it was just great to watch.

Both men battled at Night of Champions, The Bash and then in a TLC match at Summerslam which was won by CM Punk and put an end to the rivalry. They delivered three great matches and their promos leading into each event was also a thing of beauty.

Breakout Superstar of the Year: Sheamus

This comes as no surprise to anyone. "The Celtic Warrior" Sheamus reached main event status in the WWE in less then five months and will now challenge WWE champion John Cena at TLC this Sunday.

Some fans were not too pleased to see Sheamus get a shot this early, but let's face it, he is talented. Sheamus has a great gimmick, is good on the mic and has talent in the ring. It was the same thing for Undertaker and Brock Lesnar when they made their debuts.

Whether Sheamus wins the WWE championship or not, expect big things from this man in 2010. He really is the "Breakout Superstar" of 2009.

Most Improved Superstar of the Year: The Miz

There is no doubt that The Miz has elevated his game in 2009, Really...REALLY. When he was teaming with John Morrison, a lot of fans thought Morrison was the talent of the team and that he was the better of the two.

The Miz has spent most of the year proving that wrong. He not only became the United States champion, but he defeated John Morrison at Bragging Rights and Survivor Series.

The WWE has spent quite some time on making The Miz a bigger name which will hopefully pay off in 2010.

Return of the Year: Christian

It wasn't a big surprise to see Christian back because everybody had already heard of his comeback. With that said, it was still really great to have him back where he belongs, the WWE.

Christian has spent the year on the ECW roster and for the most part as it's ECW champion. He is now set to defend that title against Shelton Benjamin at TLC in a ladder match.

2010 should be an interesting year for Christian, let's just hope he is drafted to either Raw or Smackdown.

There you have it, the 2009 WWE awards. Be sure to watch TLC this Sunday as it should prove to be a great event. If you thought 2009 was good, my bet is 2010 will be even better.
