Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on Kenny Omega, WALTER and More

Erik Beaston

Kenny Omega's defeat at the hands of "Hangman" Adam Page at AEW Full Gear not only cost him the world championship, but it may have also landed him on the shelf.

The Best Bout Machine is currently suffering from a shoulder problem, and while the extent of that injury is not yet known, rumors swirl about his in-ring status.

That topic headlines a collection of rumors that also includes former NXT UK champion WALTER potentially moving to the United States and whether there was an order from TNT limiting women's wrestling on AEW TV.

Kenny Omega Needs Shoulder Surgery?

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported former AEW world champion Kenny Omega may be out of action for an extended period:

"The word making the rounds is that Kenny Omega may be out for an extended period of time from in-ring action as he's likely looking at shoulder surgery. The hope is they will have some clarity on that within the week. Omega had been badly banged up even when the promotion launched in 2019 following a grueling run in New Japan Pro-Wrestling."

Dave Meltzer reported a few days earlier that Omega had been battling injury and could barely lift weight in the gym.

After two years of superb work atop All Elite Wrestling, not to mention his NJPW run that featured some of the best matches of the last decade, the wear and tear appears to have caught up with the 38-year-old.

Considering the overarching role Omega took as world champion over the past year, and the endgame he achieved at Full Gear by putting Page over in the main event, perhaps now is the best time for him to take the time he needs.

Not only does he have the opportunity to heal, but he can also take a step back and let his character breathe so that when he does return, it is a bigger deal with greater fanfare surrounding it.

If there is such a thing as a silver lining in this regard, that would be it.

WALTER in the United States Update

Johnson also revealed WALTER is more open to moving to the United States than at any time in his career, thanks to changes in his personal life.

The former NXT UK champion's previous reluctance to make the move has prevented him from becoming a star on the main roster, despite performances that suggest he could easily be mixing it up with Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Big E and the rest of the prime-time players on Mondays and Fridays.

One of the most impressive wrestlers on the planet thanks to his ability to mesh mat wrestling with punishing strikes and a chop that will cave an opponent's chest in, he has captured the attention of WWE fans with classic matches against Tyler Bate and Ilja Dragunov, among others.

Considering the lack of quality heels on the main roster and WALTER's ability to have the sort of physical matches that aren't happening elsewhere on the card, he would fit on either Raw or SmackDown, where he would almost instantly become a top-tier player.

Regardless of the brand, it would be disappointing to see a guy in the prime of his career not have the opportunity to stand in front of a worldwide audience and thrive against the most recognizable stars in the industry because he absolutely would.

Update on Number of Women's Matches on AEW TV

Despite rumors to the contrary, there was no edict by TNT that AEW only have one women's match per episode of Dynamite, according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select.

Despite the critical success of AEW programming, its women's division has received scrutiny for the lack of focus shown to it over the first two years of its existence. The company has either promoted just one match on the show, underdeveloped its talent or presented lackluster storylines in relation to those featuring male competitors.

Of late, that trend has been reversed, with more effort put into creating secondary stories away from the championship scene. We have seen it with Serena Deeb and Hikaru Shida's feud, as well as Jade Cargill vs. Red Velvet.

Getting to a place in the future where AEW feels more comfortable presenting multiple women's matches on a show would be great, but the strides being made by the company at this time are also a welcome change from what the division once was.

The talent is there and the focus finally is. Eventually, the increased prominence will be, too.
