The San Francisco 49ers felt it was their responsibility to at least inquire about Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' availability. 

On Thursday, 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters, "To me when the MVP of the league might be available...yeah we inquired. It was a quick end to the conversation. It wasn't happening."

Lynch's comments come after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Rodgers has grown "so disgruntled with the Green Bay Packers that he has told some within the organization that he does not want to return to the team."

San Francisco immediately jumped out as a hypothetical destination seeing how the quarterback is from California and could step right into a team that is ready to win now after reaching the Super Bowl during the 2019 campaign.

The 49ers also had the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft and could have included it in a potential trade.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the NFC West team was monitoring Rodgers and Deshaun Watson prior to the draft. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported San Francisco reached out to the Packers about a possible Rodgers trade on Wednesday, although it did not make a formal offer.

One source said there is a "zero percent chance" the Packers deal Rodgers.

Lynch's comments echo that sentiment, although the 49ers addressed the quarterback position in Thursday's draft when they selected North Dakota State's Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick.
