The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly "working through their process" regarding the future of Ben Roethlisberger with the team, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on SportsCenter.

Despite some speculation about retirement, Fowler noted, "Most people I talk to in that building believe Roethlisberger will be back for an 18th season."

One key will be adjusting the contract as the veteran quarterback has a $41.25 million cap hit for 2021, the final year of his current deal.

The Steelers could also wait on any decision to leave time to celebrate the career of Maurkice Pouncey, who announced his retirement Saturday.

Pittsburgh will likely remain patient with Roethlisberger, who has been the face of the franchise for nearly two decades. The quarterback led the team to two Super Bowl titles and has six Pro Bowls on his resume.

Consistency was a problem in 2020, however. The squad began with an 11-0 record but lost five of the final six games, including in the first round of the playoffs to the Cleveland Browns.

Roethlisberger totaled 501 passing yards and four touchdowns in the postseason loss, although his four interceptions were a major part of the upset. The offense was also a question mark throughout the year, finishing 12th in the NFL in points scored but just 24th in yards from scrimmage.

The Steelers have some alternatives on the roster at quarterback, including Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins and Joshua Dobbs, but none have proven they can be legitimate starters in the NFL.
