The Alabama Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes have potential first-round NFL draft talent littered across their respective rosters.
For either team to capture the College Football Playoff National Championship, they will need some players in supporting roles to make big plays on Monday.
When Alabama last won the title, an unsung hero named DeVonta Smith caught the game-winning touchdown pass. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy three years later.
Monday's under-the-radar stars may not turn into the best players in college football, or top NFL prospects, but they could do enough to etch their names in title lore.
Josh Jobe, DB, Alabama
Josh Jobe has been a reliable contributor in Alabama's secondary this season, but his play has been overshadowed by Patrick Surtain II, who could be a top 10 selection in the 2021 NFL draft.
If Surtain is matched up with Chris Olave and shuts down Ohio State's top wide receiver, Jobe could see an increase of targets in his direction.
Justin Fields could look to Garrett Wilson to make a few big plays, if Olave is occupied by Surtain, or he could try to take advantage of the times Olave and Jobe are lined up across from each other.
However, the Buckeyes quarterback may not achieve much success if he throws in Jobe's direction. During SEC play, the defensive back allowed a single touchdown on 47 targets, per Pro Football Focus College Football.
If Jobe puts a blanket over one side of the field, Ohio State's passing game could be limited in how it attacks Alabama with big plays.
If Fields is unable to go over the top to Olave and Wilson for big plays, the Buckeyes will be forced to grind out scoring drives, instead of hitting Alabama with lengthy touchdowns, like it did to break away from the Clemson Tigers in the Sugar Bowl.
Tommy Togiai, DT, Ohio State
Ohio State needs to either pressure Mac Jones in the pocket, or find a way to halt Najee Harris' progress to get Alabama's offense off the field.
In the Sugar Bowl, the Buckeyes' interior linemen limited Travis Etienne to 32 rushing yards on 10 attempts and earned a pair of sacks against Trevor Lawrence.
Tommy Togiai is one of the under-the-radar stars in the trenches who will be key once again to Ohio State's success.
Fields can put up as many points as he wants, but if the Big Ten champion fails to shut down the three-headed monster of Jones, Harris and DeVonta Smith, it could be on the wrong end of a shootout.
Togiai will be tasked with shutting down the interior running lanes for Harris. If the Buckeyes can force the running back outside, the speedier linebackers and defensive backs could have success wrapping him up for minimal gains.
Harris has been held under 50 yards on two occasions this season, but he still found the end zone twice in those contests.
If Togiai, Haskell Garrett and others hold Harris out of the end zone and stop him from breaking big gains, Ohio State could take away one dimension of the Crimson Tide offense.
Jones has only been sacked 11 times, but six of those takedowns occurred against Top 10 opposition. If Togiai and Co. get to the Alabama quarterback once or twice, it could affect the Crimson Tide's efficiency.
