Paris Saint-Germain announced Saturday superstar forward Neymar will miss the remainder of 2020 because of an ankle injury.

"Following the sprain to his left ankle, there is some bruising to the bone and he continues to undergo treatment at the training ground," the PSG statement read. "He is expected to make his return in January."

Neymar was injured Sunday after a tackle by Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes.

The 28-year-old Brazilian already sat out Wednesday's 2-0 win over Lorient, and he'll miss at least two other fixtures: Sunday's visit to Stade Pierre-Mauroy to face league-leading Lille and next Wednesday's home clash with Strasbourg, the club's last match of 2020.

Although he'll miss the key matchup with Lille, PSG is likely pleased he avoided a more serious injury after he was stretched off the field against Lyon.

"It could have been worse, but once again God saved me from something serious," Neymar wrote on Instagram (via Goal's Sam France). "My cry was of pain, despair, fear, anguish, surgery, crutches and other horrible memories. I hope to recover and return as quickly as possible."

The two-time Ballon d'Or finalist is off to a strong start to the 2020-21 term. He's recorded three goals and four assists in seven Ligue 1 appearances to go along with six goals in five Champions League games.

His first chance to return during the new year will come Jan. 6 against Saint-Etienne.

It's the first of six matches scheduled in January for the Parisians, including the Trophee des Champions final against Marseille on Jan. 13.
