While it hardly went off without a hitch, the first week of the 2020-21 men's college basketball season is in the books.  

Gonzaga remains the nation's top-ranked team after an undefeated week, highlighted by a season-opening win over Kansas, and is followed by Baylor, which also got through the opening stanza at 2-0. Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois round out the Top Five after some upsets elsewhere shuffled the top of the rankings.

Villanova and Virginia both found themselves falling down the rankings after suffering upsets. The Wildcats allowed Virginia Tech to shoot 50 percent from beyond the arc and watched as their own long-range shots clanged off the rim in an 81-73 overtime loss to the Hokies. Keve Aluma led the way with 23 points and Nahiem Alleyne added 20 off the bench for Virginia Tech, which moves into the rankings at No. 16.

Villanova led by 12 with under nine minutes remaining in regulation but could not seal the deal. 

"You learn when you have a lead and you're playing against a good team, you've got to play every possession until the end," Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters. "So, we're definitely going to learn that the hard way."

San Francisco knocked down 13 threes and limited Virginia to three in a 61-60 upset of the Cavaliers. After scoring just 21 first-half points, the Dons exploded for 40 after the break, leading by as many as seven points down the stretch. Sam Hauser missed a three-point shot for Virginia that would have allowed them to escape with a victory. 

"Look at it in the mirror, grow from it," Virginia coach Tony Bennett told reporters. "We've got to kind of harden up. We've got to get gritty. We've got to be tougher to score against and be the best version of ourselves."

Three-point woes also got to Kentucky, which missed all 10 of its attempts in a 76-64 upset against Richmond. Four Spiders were in double figures to give the program its first road win over a Top 10 team.

Blake Francis and Nathan Cayo led the way with a matching team-high 18 points, spearheading Richmond's 48-point second half. 

"You just get to play a team like Kentucky so rarely," Richmond coach Chris Mooney told reporters. "So for us to have the opportunity to play them with a great team is great, and we seized that opportunity. It's a tremendous win. Kentucky loses very rarely, they lose out of conference very rarely, so this is a great win."

The Spiders slid into the Top 25 at No. 19, while Kentucky sits one spot behind them at No. 20. The Wildcats' 10-spot drop is the second-highest of the week, behind Virginia's 11-spot slide.
