Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard said Thursday the team isn't looking to trade shooting guard Bradley Beal during the 2020 NBA offseason.
"We're building this team around Bradley Beal," Sheppard said on The Lowe Post podcast. "He's a tremendous human being. He's a tremendous player. He's exactly what we want to have here with the Washington Wizards."
Beal has been the focus of heavy trade speculation for the past couple of years, but it's never reached a point where it appeared the Wizards were actually on the verge of moving him.
In October, the 27-year-old University of Florida product said on the On the Road with Buck & Phil podcast (via Frank Urbina of HoopsHype) he'd prefer to spend his entire career with the Wiz.
"That would mean the world, man. I'm a loyal guy. I want to be here," Beal said. "I'm here. I've signed my extension. And that will mean the world to me. That honestly would you know, being able to finish your career in one place? You know, you don't see that in today's game."
Beal is signed through 2022 with a player option for 2022-23 after signing a two-year, $71.8 million extension on top of his current five-year, $127.2 million contract.
The St. Louis native is coming off a 2019-20 season where he averaged 30.5 points, which ranked second in the NBA behind the Houston Rockets' James Harden (34.3), to go along with 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 57 games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.
Beal should be ready to roll to open next season and so should backcourt mate John Wall, who missed the entire campaign while recovering from a torn ACL.
The last time Wall played a full season (2016-17), Washington finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 49-33 record and reached the second round of the playoffs.
That's why a complete roster makeover didn't make sense this offseason, especially given the shortened nature as the NBA aims to resume play Dec. 22. The front office can get a look at whether the core can still compete in the East before deciding its next steps either at the trade deadline or next summer.
Along with Beal and Wall, the Wizards also have some promising young building blocks in Rui Hachimura and Thomas Bryant as well as the ninth overall pick in the 2020 draft to add another. It provides reason for optimism heading into the new campaign.
