2020 NBA 2K League Results: Hornets and Blazer5 Gaming Advance in Playoffs

Theo Salaun

It's looking like a tidy NBA 2K League 2020 playoffs so far, as the first day on Thursday wrapped with two quick sweeps. The four lowest seeds got things started, before Hornets Venom GT and Blazer5 Gaming quickly ended NetsGC's and Mavs Gaming's seasons.

Close in seeding, the No. 8 Blazer5 beat the No. 9 Nets by single digits in consecutive matches. The red-hot No. 10 Blazer5 took out a No. 7 Mavs squad quite comfortably.

With the first day complete, we can take a look at why Charlotte and Portland have some potential to make noise in the later rounds. Here are the full scores, followed by the biggest highlights and performances.

Playoffs, Day 1 Scores

NetsGC 0 - 2 Hornets Venom GT

Game 1: NGC 69 - 74 HVG

Game 2: NGC 71 - 73 HVG

Blazer5 Gaming 2 - 0 Mavs Gaming

Game 1: BZG 73 - 64 MVG

Game 2: BZG 85 - 68 MVG

Brooklyn did not play poorly against Charlotte, but the Hornets simply played better. In Game 1, the entire Nets roster shot 50 percent or higher from the field, with Choc leading the way at point guard by dropping in 32 points and 13 assists and Shuttles leading the way at center with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

But the Nets lost Game 1 by five and Game 2 by two because Charlotte was incredibly balanced and consistent. While Choc followed up with 38 in Game 2, he turned the ball over seven times, and Shuttles  only scored six points in Game 2. This may have been influenced by Charlotte's center, Type, who was a defensive presence all day.

On the other side, Charlotte's point guard and big got silly. Snubby, at the point, dropped 29 points and four assists in each game, while Type put up 23 points and 14 rebounds in Game 1 followed by posting 21 and 12, respectively, in Game 2—including a clutch offensive rebound and bucket to win the game.

Later, Portland made relatively easy work of Dallas. The Mavs were the highest seed of the day's matches, but a revamped Blazer5 squad is getting incredible value out of their shooting guard, MaJes7ic.

While the Mavs struggled to get scoring from players other than their point guard, Sherm, the Blazer5 got output from multiple spots. Their point, Mama Im Dat Man, registered 28 points and 10 assists in Game 1 followed by 36 and eight in Game 2. Their center, OneWildWalnut, chipped in 16 points and 14 rebounds in Game 1 followed by 17 and 16 in Game 2. But the difference-maker was MaJes7ic, who dropped 17 in Game 1 and 22 in Game 2.

Scoring consistency is hard to come by in the 2K League, particularly at the wings. While Thursday's winning teams had the balance and consistency to expose weaknesses in their opponents, their roads get tougher Friday. The Hornets will face off against the No. 2 seed, Jazz Gaming, while Blazer5 will meet the undefeated and top-seeded Raptors Uprising GC.
