The 2020 World Team Tennis season rolled on Saturday with a day-long slate of four matches at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Entering the day, a heated playoff race saw just 2.5 games separating third place from last place in the nine-team standings heading into the stretch run of the 14-match regular season. The top four clubs will qualify for the postseason when the campaign ends Thursday.

Let's take a look at Saturday's schedule and results, which will be updated through the conclusion of play. That's followed by a recap of the action.

July 25 Schedule and Results

Orlando Storm defeated Philadelphia Freedoms, 23-13

Orange County Breakers defeated Springfield Lasers, 24-21

Washington Kastles def. San Diego Aviators, 23-16

Chicago Smash def. New York Empire, 21-16

Chicago (8-2) 21, New York (5-5) 16

With their 21-16 victory over New York, the Smash earned their third straight win overall and made things very interesting in the race for the final playoff spot.

Things started out promising for the Empire by winning two of the first three matches. Kim Clijsters and Hailey Baptiste got the team off on a good note, defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Eugenie Bouchard 5-4 in women's doubles.

Brandon Nakashima got Chicago back on track with a 5-3 win over Jack Sock in the men's singles matchup.

Sock was able to get a modicum of revenge, alongside Clijsters, in the mixed doubles match. The Empire duo knocked off Chicago's pairing of Bouchard and Rajeev Ram 5-2.

That would end up being the peak moment for New York, which lost 10 of the final 13 sets between the women's singles and women's doubles matches.

Chicago's win, combined with Philadelphia's loss earlier in the day, leaves the two teams tied for the best record overall (8-2). The Smash and Freedoms will square off Wednesday in a showdown that could determine the top seed in the playoffs.

New York's loss is significant because it drops the team into a tie with Washington for the final playoff spot leading into their head-to-head meeting Sunday at noon ET.

Washington (5-5) 23, San Diego (3-7) 16

Washington was able to keep pace in the playoff race by sending San Diego to its fourth straight loss.

Bernarda Pera got the Kastles off to a fast start with a 5-2 win over Christina McHale in women's singles action.

Tommy Paul kept the momentum going for Washington in the men's singles match. He was able to put Ryan Harrison away 5-4 in a tiebreaker to put his team ahead 10-6 overall.

San Diego did claw its way back into contention during the women's doubles match. Coco Vandeweghe and Nicole Melichar gave the Aviators their first win of the day, 5-3 over Venus Williams and Arina Rodionova.

With the pressure starting to mount heading into mixed doubles match, the Kastles gave themselves more breathing room thanks to Pera and Marcelo Arevalo's 5-1 win against Harrison and Vandeweghe.

Arevalo remained on the court for men's doubles, where he partnered with Nick Monroe. They earned the 5-4 win when Jonny O'Mara double-faulted for the second time in the match.

Washington has a crucial matchup with the New York Empire (5-5) on Sunday that could determine the fourth and final playoff team.

Orlando (6-4) 23, Philadelphia (8-2) 13

The Storm picked up a massive victory in their playoff quest by knocking off the first-place Freedoms.

Tennys Sandgren and Ken Skupski sparked the upset with a clean 5-0 sweep over Fabrice Martin and Donald Young in the men's doubles set to open the match.

Jessica Pegula won two sets for Orlando. She cruised past Sofia Kenin in women's singles (5-2) and teamed with Darija Jurak to defeat Taylor Townsend and Caroline Dolehide in women's doubles (5-3).

Sandgren capped the strong performance by the Storm with a 5-3 triumph over Taylor Fritz in men's singles.

Philadelphia's only set win came via Townsend and Martin, who edged Pegula and Skupski in mixed doubles (5-3).

Both teams are back in action Sunday. The Storm once again start the slate with a 9 a.m. ET clash against the Lasers, while the Freedoms take on the Aviators in the 7 p.m. ET nightcap.

Orange County (4-7) 24, Springfield (3-7) 21

Both the Breakers and Lasers are running out of time to make the necessary charge to earn a playoff berth, so perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise their head-to-head battle was one of the closest matches of the season.

Four of the five sets went the distance, and the other, a men's doubles victory by Orange County's Steve Johnson and Austin Krajicek, nearly did (5-3).

Jennifer Brady was the Breakers' clutch performer, beating Catherine McNally in women's singles and teaming up with Gabriela Dabrowski to narrowly defeat McNally and Hayley Carter in women's doubles.

Mitchell Krueger beat Johnson in men's singles. Robert Lindstedt and McNally defeated Johnson and Brady in mixed doubles. Those wins were enough to force extended play, but the Lasers weren't able to mount a comeback in the extra session.

Orange County is off Sunday after the key win. Springfield is back on the court to face Orlando.
