Tiger Woods Withdraws from WGC-FedEx Invitational to Prep for PGA Championship

Tiger Woods announced Friday that he will not play in next week's WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Woods wrote on Twitter that he is sitting out the tournament because he is "doing what I think is best to prepare me for the PGA Championship and upcoming FedExCup Playoffs."

The 2020 PGA Championship will be held Aug. 6-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

Woods took part in last week's the Memorial Tournament, which was his first official tournament since February, as the PGA Tour took an extended break because of the coronavirus pandemic. Tiger finished 40th with a score of six over par.

Since starting the season strong with a win in the Zozo Championship in October followed by a fourth-place finish in the Hero World Challenge and ninth-place result in the Farmers Insurance Open, Woods has struggled a bit.

Tiger finished 68th at the Genesis Invitational, which was his final tourney before the pandemic, and he followed that up with a 40th-place finish last week, although the latter could potentially be chalked up to rust.

The 44-year-old Woods completed one of the greatest comeback stories in sports history last year when he won the Masters for the fifth time in his career. That marked Tiger's 15th major championship victory and first since the 2008 U.S. Open.

Woods overcame personal demons and significant back and knee injuries to return to the pinnacle of the sport, but he is still working toward the goal of matching or surpassing Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 career major championship wins.

By sitting out events like the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, Woods is looking to keep himself fresh and healthy for majors such as the PGA Championship, as well as the U.S. Open and Masters, which also have yet to be played.

The 2020 Open Championship was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Woods said last week during the Memorial Tournament that he dealt with some back stiffness in the second round, so taking next week off may be the best course of action in terms of giving him a chance to contend in the PGA Championship.
