Memorial Tournament 2020: Jon Rahm Cruises to Win, Secures No. 1 World Ranking

Timothy Rapp

Jon Rahm is now the top-ranked golfer in the world.

He finished off a dominant performance at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday by shooting a three-over 75 to win the event. He finished the tournament at nine under, three strokes better than runner-up Ryan Palmer. Matthew Fitzpatrick (-5), Matt Wallace (-4) and Jason Day (-4) rounded out the top five.

For Rahm, reaching No. 1 in the rankings is quite the milestone:

Rahm's day wasn't without some controversy. It appeared he had landed one of the best shots of the tournament with his birdie chip on the 16th.

But upon further review, he ended up being hit with a two-stroke penalty after the ball moved during his practice strokes.

Rahm didn't learn about it until his round was over, which made for an entertaining reaction. About as entertaining as the reaction on social media:

In the scheme of things, the penalty was immaterial given his convincing lead.

As for other notable golfers, many struggled throughout the tournament. Jordan Spieth (+1) shot five over on Saturday and Sunday combined, while last week's world No. 1, Rory McIlroy (+4), shot a 78 on Sunday to fall out of contention. Tiger Woods (+6) also had a tough final round, shooting a 76, and a tough overall tournament in his first action since February.

"Tough, tough conditions to start out my first week back, Thursday and Sunday," he said, per Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press. "But it was good to get the feel and the flow of competing again."

Phil Mickelson (+9) shot his final three rounds over par, though he did provide one of the most fascinating sequences of the day:

Justin Thomas, who remains atop the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, shot a two-over for the tournament and finished tied for 18th.

Up next is the 3M Open at the TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, on Thursday.
