Tiger Woods: Back Injury Was an Issue During 2nd Round of Memorial Tournament

Adam Wells

Tiger Woods' return to the golf course didn't go as well as he had hoped, though an injured back may have played a role in the outcome.

Speaking to reporters after his second round at The Memorial, Woods said he first noticed his back was causing problems during warm-ups on Friday.

"It's going to happen more times than not these days," he added.

Woods noted the main problem was he "couldn't quite turn back and couldn't quite clear" and said the round "was a bit of a struggle." The 44-year-old followed up his opening-round 71 with a four-over 76 on Friday and is in danger of missing the cut.

The Memorial marked Woods' first tournament appearance since the Genesis Invitational in February. He has dealt with numerous back injuries throughout his career, including having four surgical procedures between March 2014 and April 2017.

Woods' second round got off to a bad start with a double bogey and bogey on his first two holes. He was four over par through No. 6 before briefly getting back on track with consecutive birdies.

At the time Woods' day was finished, the projected cut line was three over. The Memorial has historically been one of his best events. He's won it five times, with his most recent victory coming in 2012.
