Lakers' Danny Green: NBA Players Want to Salvage Season 'By Any Means Necessary'

Los Angeles Lakers sharp-shooter Danny Green is among those who believe there will be a finish to the 2019-20 season.

He said the players plan to use "any means necessary ... to try and salvage the season" on his Inside the Green Room podcast (h/t Harrison Faigen of SB Nation's Silver Screen and Roll) after sitting in on a call with the National Basketball Players Association.

"Right now we're fighting," he said while discussing potentially starting the season in May. "Most guys think that for sure we're going to have a season, it's just going to start later than we expected, and just trying to get the next season to be pushed back is not going to be as easy as people think it's going to be."

He pointed out that broadcast partners may not be fine with pushing the start of the 2020-21 season back even if the current season runs as late as September, which would lead to "a quick turnaround."

The fact Green's optimism comes after a discussion with the NBPA at least suggests there is a level of optimism among players that the season will resume, but it stands in stark contrast to some previous reports.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Friday that more of the league's discussions with the NBPA have centered around financial plans in the case of a cancellation rather than fully developing contingencies for actually playing.

"The NBA is angling to set up a deal that enables them to shut the season down," he said.

There was also additional pessimism when Windhorst reported the Chinese government halted a potential restart of its country's professional basketball league, which was all the more notable because "China's attempt to restart sports are being watched closely by leagues across the world."

Green's own teammate, Jared Dudley, was far more pessimistic than the guard, saying "it's looking more bleak by the day" during an interview with Michael Lee of The Athletic.

Dudley also called this season the Lakers "best chance" to win a title with the current core, which is not surprising considering they sit atop the Western Conference standings and have a 35-year-old LeBron James leading the way.

Green apparently thinks Los Angeles will have a chance to win the championship after all.
