The Washington Redskins are reportedly set to release cornerback Josh Norman after four seasons.

Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported the update Friday and noted Washington will save $12.5 million in cap space while retaining $3 million in dead money with the move.

Norman fell out of favor in Washington during the latter stages of the 2019 season and was moved into a reserve role, which made his release a formality given his substantial salary. He finished the year with 40 total tackles, six passes defended, one interception and a forced fumble in 12 appearances.

The 32-year-old Coastal Carolina product received a lackluster 45.6 grade from Pro Football Focus.

"I don't think I've spoken in a long time just because I want to be prepared and everything, but I've been built up strong," Norman told reporters in December about being benched. "This has made me stronger. I will rise again for it because that's who I am. ... Sucks that I can't prove it right now, but formalities and situations, you've got to play the cards you're dealt."

The South Carolina native had previously emerged as one of the league's top corners with the Carolina Panthers, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL draft. He earned Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro honors in 2015, his final year with the Panthers before joining the Redskins.

In all, Norman has recorded 416 tackles, 79 passes defended, 14 interceptions, 12 forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns in 111 games across eight seasons.

Being released now will give the corner an opportunity to seek out free-agent offers right away rather than having to wait until the new league year begins March 18.

Norman may opt for a short-term, incentive-laden contract in an effort to rebuild his value after a down year, which would give him a chance to reenter free agency with a chance to score one more lucrative deal.
