Report: Joe Judge, Giants Denied Interview with Bills' Brian Daboll for OC Job

Tyler Conway

The New York Giants reportedly sought permission to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll for the same position with their organization, but they were denied.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv reported Daboll was "high atop [Joe] Judge's wish list" for his offensive coordinator spot. The Giants' new head coach and Daboll served on the New England Patriots' coaching staff together from 2013-16.

Judge has looked to populate his Giants staff with familiar faces, reportedly hiring Dolphins defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, a former assistant under Bill Belichick for seven years, to fill the same role. With the Bills refusing to give the Giants permission to interview Daboll, the team moved on to interviewing former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett for the position.

Daboll, 44, has been the Bills' offensive coordinator since 2018. He's been instrumental in second-year QB Josh Allen's development and was a candidate for the Cleveland Browns' coaching vacancy that went to Kevin Stefanski. The Bills granted Daboll permission to interview with the Browns, but it's typical that NFL teams deny permission for coaches looking to make a lateral move.

The Giants' new offensive coordinator will be critical in the development of Daniel Jones, who flashed promise but struggled with turnovers during his rookie season. The No. 6 overall draft pick threw for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns but added 12 picks and fumbled a staggering 18 times, with 11 of them lost.

Garrett spent the last 10 seasons with the Cowboys and has had a hand in developing Dak Prescott into a Pro Bowl passer. He has, however, never been viewed as an elite X's and O's offensive mind around the NFL and ceded play-calling duties during the latter part of his Dallas tenure.

The Giants are also considering Mike Shula, their offensive coordinator the last two seasons, for the position.
