Giants Rumors: Ex-Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett Interviewing for Vacant OC Job

Tyler Conway

Former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett might not be out of a job for long.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Garrett is at Giants facilities Wednesday to meet about their vacant offensive coordinator position. Garrett's contract with the Cowboys officially expired this week, giving him the freedom to talk with all 31 other NFL clubs.

The Cowboys parted ways with Garrett earlier this month after a decade at the helm and hired former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

Garrett would be joining the staff of Joe Judge, by far the most surprising coaching hire of the offseason. Judge came over from the New England Patriots, where he served as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. The Patriots were widely viewed as having one of the worst receiving corps in football in 2019, and their special teams ranked 11th in Football Outsiders' DVOA metric.

Garrett would bring some head coaching experience to the staff, a trait it is lacking. The Giants hired Patrick Graham as their defensive coordinator this week. Graham was a longtime assistant with Judge in New England.

While Garrett's seasoning as a head coach makes it a bit surprising he'd be interested in an offensive coordinator job, this was not a typical firing situation. The Cowboys allowed Garrett's contract to expire to avoid having to pay him not to coach next season, as is the case with the vast majority of firings.

Garrett would also get a chance to work with Daniel Jones. If Jones shows development in his second NFL season, it's possible Garrett could get head coaching looks a year from now.

Garrett played for the Giants from 2000 to 2003 as a backup quarterback.
