In 2019, All Elite Wrestling established itself as a true alternative and viable competitor to WWE with its stellar string of shows on pay-per-view and on TNT. In 2020, it must keep the ball rolling with compelling programming and unprecedented matches that will give fans even more of a reason to tune in.
AEW has already proved to be the place where matchups many thought would never become a reality, did. Cody and Dustin Rhodes clashed in an instant classic for the ages at Double or Nothing, while The Young Bucks and The Lucha Brothers battled for tag team supremacy in the summer.
Dynamite has also hosted a handful of unprecedented matches since its launch three months ago, including Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin and The Young Bucks vs. Private Party. However, AEW must refrain from giving away every potential money match on the table before the close of 2020.
With AEW's roster being so stacked, the possibilities are endless for rivalries that can be booked this year. Some are expected to happen sooner rather than later based off recent events, while others may not come to fruition until later on.
Either way, the following are five feuds AEW must make happen in 2020.
The Lucha Brothers vs. Santana and Ortiz
There can be little doubt The Lucha Brothers are among the greatest tag teams in wrestling today. Unfortunately, their current win-loss record in AEW hardly reflects that.
The duo have had their fair share of ups and downs in the last year with the upstart promotion. After falling to The Young Bucks at Double at Nothing in May, they avenged the loss in a chaotic ladder match later in the summer at All Out.
Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix then failed to win the AEW World Tag Team Championship on two separate occasions and have been floundering ever since. The same can be said for Santana and Ortiz, who were on the losing end of their heated rivalry with The Young Bucks late last year.
Both teams must re-enter the tag title picture eventually, but in the meantime, they'd benefit greatly from rekindling their rivalry from their Impact days.
Their matches there throughout 2018 were nothing short of spectacular and solidified both tandems as the best in the business. There's no reason to think their chemistry wouldn't be any less strong in AEW, especially with tag team wrestling viewed as highly as it is.
The twin titles being at stake in this feud would make their matches that much more meaningful.
Luchasaurus vs. Jake Hager
Although Jurassic Express seem to lose more matches than they win, their recent setbacks haven't affected their popularity in the slightest. In fact, the unique trio has quickly become one of the most beloved acts in all of AEW.
Jungle Boy has some buzz coming off his strong showing against AEW world champion Chris Jericho last month on Dynamite, but Luchasaurus deserves just as much attention. He's looked dominant in all of his singles matches, and his interactions with Jake Hager have not gone unnoticed.
AEW doesn't have many "monsters" under contract, so Luchasaurus and Hager come closest to fitting the bill. Not only are they far more physically imposing than the rest of the roster, they're also both incredible athletes and would be capable of contesting a great match together.
This must be the year Luchasaurus branches out and experiences success on his own, starting with a feud with Hager. That doesn't necessarily mean he needs to break away from Jurassic Express, but he should be more of a focal point than he is right now.
Considering Hager has yet to wrestle a match since signing with AEW, it's time for him to show fans what he can do and Luchasaurus would be the perfect first opponent for him.
Kenny Omega vs. Adam Page
Kenny Omega arrived in AEW almost one year ago to much fanfare, but he hasn't exactly lived up to the lofty expectations of most fans since then.
While he never ceases to deliver between the ropes, his win-loss record of 10-5 isn't befitting of a performer of his caliber. His lack of victories on pay-per-view has especially been apparent and has hindered him from feeling as special as he should.
Before he can set his sights on the AEW World Championship, Omega must first get back on the right track with a meaningful win over a credible opponent. That's where "Hangman" Adam Page comes in.
The two have been teasing tension for weeks, but neither of them have turned on the other. Omega currently has his hands full with Pac (who has been demanding a rubber match for weeks), but once that rivalry wraps up, he should focus on facing Page and working his way toward title contention.
Omega vs. Pac seems to be all but a lock for Revolution on February 29, but their feud should not extend far beyond that show.
Matches between Omega and Page could be tremendous, and there are a ton of different directions their story can go in.
More importantly, it's another high-profile program positioned toward the top of the card featuring two of AEW's most promising prospects.
Kris Statlander vs. Awesome Kong
It's amazing to see all Kris Statlander has achieved in such a short time in AEW.
Thanks to her impressive victories over the likes of Hikura Shida and Britt Baker, she was able to cement her status as the No. 1 Contender to the AEW Women's Championship in mid-December. She received her shot at the strap this past week on Dynamite but fell short following interference from The Nightmare Collective.
The Galaxy's Greatest Alien had already been feuding with the faction for weeks after turning down Brandi Rhodes' offer to join them. Following their actions against Statlander on Wednesday night, it's merely a matter of time before she seeks revenge.
Although Statlander vs. Brandi would make sense, Statlander vs. Awesome Kong has the potential to be far better. Kong hasn't done much in AEW aside from making short work of her unknown opponents and cutting their hair, but Statlander would pose a threat to her dominance.
It's possible AEW books this bout for the Revolution pay-per-view or sometime sooner, but it would be best saved for when either of them are the AEW women's champion (which shouldn't be too far off).
Regardless of when it goes down, it should be the major showdown AEW's women's division has been lacking.
Jon Moxley vs. Pac
In one year's time, Jon Moxley went from losing meaningless matches on WWE Raw to EC3 and Elias to beating Kenny Omega in an AEW pay-per-view main event.
Between those two moments in his career, he also took his talents to New Japan Pro-Wrestling and won the IWGP United States Championship on two separate occasions. It's safe to say he is a hot commodity right now, and as the current No. 1 Contender to the AEW World Championship, that isn't about to change any time soon.
Regardless of whether a run with AEW's top title is in his immediate future or not, a long-awaited feud with Pac should be.
Aside from a one-off clash for the United States Championship on an August 2013 episode of NXT, Pac and Moxley surprisingly never waged war during their years together in WWE. They had some bad blood with each other soon after Dynamite premiere on TNT, but their sole singles match ended in a time-limit draw.
Both Moxley and Pac have experienced career resurgences since signing with AEW. Clearly, they have unfinished business, and they need to settle the score at some point in 2020.
