Luke Harper Released from WWE Contract After Request Following WrestleMania

WWE finally granted Luke Harper's request for a release Sunday, more than eight months after the former Wyatt Family member expressed a desire to leave the company.

The company sent out a simple statement wishing Harper (real name Jonathan Huber) the best in his future endeavors.

Harper, 39, signed with WWE in 2012. He quickly worked his way through developmental as part of the Wyatts, making his "main roster" debut in 2013. Long viewed as one of the most underrated workers in the company, Harper held the WWE Intercontinental Championship and was a two-time SmackDown tag team champion during his tenure.

Frustrated over his lack of use after recovering from a torn bicep, Harper requested his release from WWE in April.

"As of this evening, I have requested a release from WWE," Harper wrote at the time. "The past 6 years have been a simply, amazing journey around the world and back with lifelong friends and family. I am proud of it all and proud to say I shared the ring with my co workers. This decision, as difficult as it was, feels right for myself and WWE. My goal in the future is to continue to grow as a performer and person and continue to make my family proud."

WWE did not grant Harper his release at the time and added time to his contract because of time missed due to injury. However, the company continued keeping him off television until a brief program leading up to the Clash of Champions pay-per-view. Harper teamed with Erick Rowan against Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns in a losing effort before again disappearing from television.

It's unclear if there is a non-compete clause as part of Harper's release, but it would seem like he is a good potential signing for AEW. The fledgling company needs more big, bruiser-type athletes, and Harper has a unique look who could add some cache to their midcard.
