UFC 243 Predictions: Bleacher Report Main Card Staff Picks

Nathan McCarter

Is Israel Adesanya inevitable or will Robert Whittaker continue to rule the UFC middleweight division with an iron fist? The unification bout is the endgame as the UFC treks to Melbourne, Australia, for UFC 243 at Marvel Stadium.

Adesanya captured the interim middleweight crown in April, and with Whittaker healthy, the division is once again set to have a single, undisputed champion. It is a matchup that could very well be Fight of the Year.

In the co-main event, lightweight contenders Al Iaquinta and Dan Hooker seek to make their mark before the end of the year and establish themselves as potential threats for lightweight gold in 2020.

The B/R crew, Scott Harris, Nathan McCarter and Jonathan Snowden, have assembled again to share their prognostications. Who from the UFC 243 main card will walk out of the Octagon with their hand raised high? The answers are below.

Both Adesanya and Whittaker will do whatever it takes, and UFC 243 is set for an amazing night Down Under.

Justin Tafa vs. Yorgan De Castro

De Castro's here because he finished a dude in a way creative enough to pull Dana White away from his phone. But a reality-show win won't be enough here. With the hometown wind in his sails, Tafa wins a donnybrook.

Typically the Contender Series participant is the one with the favorable matchup, but in this instance, I think they are serving up De Castro for Tafa. I am not quite sure what the ceiling is for Tafa, but it is substantially higher than De Castro's. This should be a hot start for the home crowd with a big finish.

De Castro is another Dana White discovery, promoted to the main card from obscurity. Is that enough to trump an accolade like "Mark Hunt protege"? Pffft, I say. Pfft. Give me Tafa to open the main card with a bang.

Luke Jumeau vs. Dhiego Lima

Harris

Lima's a journeyman at this point, a legit grappler who seems to lack that (admittedly elusive) sixth gear. But he'll have an advantage here with his sheer athleticism.

Lima, unanimous decision

McCarter

Scott hit the nail on the head here in giving Lima the edge and the unanimous-decision victory. With that said, Jumeau is a fun matchup for him that should give fans a competitive fight for 15 minutes. So much so that this is a likely sleeper for Fight of the Night. There'll be some gritty exchanges in this one.

Lima, unanimous decision

Snowden

Dhiego, aka "the other Lima," is not the fighter his brother Douglas is. Luckily he won't have to be in order to beat an ordinary fighter like Jumeau.

Lima, unanimous decision

Tai Tuivasa vs. Sergey Spivac

Harris

At the risk of sounding too technical, give me the guy who drinks beer out of other people's shoes. He also happens to be one of the hardest hitters on the UFC roster.

Tuivasa, KO, Rd. 1

McCarter

This is as close to a squash match you will get in MMA. Tuivasa has charisma and is a crowd pleaser in the cage. The UFC is rehabbing him here with Spivac. A quick and emphatic night for the local.

Snowden

Tuivasa is more than just a guy who drinks beer out of other people's shoes, Scott. He's a guy who does it every time he wins! Anyone can be crazy for a moment in time. Tuivasa is a guy who lives that gimmick 24/7. I'll ride with a guy like that until the very end.

Al Iaquinta vs. Dan Hooker

Harris

I like this matchup a lot. Iaquinta has the wrestling to (literally) take Hooker down. But give me the hometown hero here. That loss to Edson Barboza took some shine away, but outside of that, Hooker has knocked out Gilbert Burns, Jim Miller and James Vick in succession. Pretty good.

Hooker, TKO, Rd. 2

McCarter

This boils down to something very simple: Iaquinta is the better fighter. There are areas where Hooker may have the advantage, and his physical stature may pose some problems as well. But Iaquinta is a top-level lightweight with heavy hands and a good ground game. Once he figures out how to get inside the range of Hooker, he'll get the offense he needs to edge Hooker on the scorecards.

Iaquinta, unanimous decision

Snowden

This card is evenly matched throughout, and this fight is the perfect example. You can make a strong case for either man. Their striking prowess, in my mind at least, is relatively similar. The difference will be size and power. Hooker will have an enormous reach advantage, is sturdy enough to take Raging Al's most infuriated punches and will eventually put one on the smaller man.

Robert Whittaker vs. Israel Adesanya

Harris

Not to be corny, but I really sense an element of destiny here. Adesanya has an otherworldly striking game that's evident even to someone who's never watched a fight before. Whittaker is a great fighter. Adesanya is special.

Adesanya, unanimous decision

McCarter

I think I'll have to stop by my local movie theatre to buy a large bucket of popcorn for this one. I love everything about this fight, and the Adesanya-Gastelum interim title-fight brawl only made this matchup more enticing.

There are a lot of questions on Whittaker's side. He has suffered various injuries and only fought twice, both against Yoel Romero, in two years. Does he return in peak form, or has all of that taken a toll? Would it even matter because Adesanya is so incredibly talented on the feet? I lean toward the champion. Bobby Knuckles is unsung in so many ways, and he'll once again defy expectations by besting Adesanya on the feet. In fact, I'll go so far as to say Whittaker catches him and finishes him in the championship rounds.

Strap in. This is a good one.

Whittaker, TKO, Rd. 4

Snowden

It's hard to figure out what to expect from a fighter with an injury history like Whittaker's. If he's still Robert Whittaker, I think he has the overall game to win this fight. If he's just a guy wearing Robert Whittaker's skin, this gets dicey. I'm going to be a half-full fella for once and predict that one of the UFC's top fighters is still at the peak of his powers.

Whittaker, unanimous decision
