Report: Tyreek Hill, Crystal Espinal in Legal Battle for Custody of Their Son

Timothy Rapp

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill is currently fighting for joint custody of his four-year-old son with Crystal Espinal, according to TMZ Sports.

Per that report, Espinal has had sole custody since February 2018, but Hill said in court documents that after he traveled to visit the child and build their relationship multiple times, he took a more active role in parenting when Espinal moved in with him in September 2018.

However, "he alleges that after his relationship with Espinal went sideways over child abuse allegations earlier this year—he's only been allowed minimal time with his son."

Hill and Espinal were investigated earlier in 2019 after their son broke his arm. Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe declined to press charges, however, saying in June that he believed a crime had taken place but didn't feel there was enough evidence to conclude who committed the crime or to prosecute that person.

Espinal accused Hill of the abuse against their son in a recording that was later released publicly, including punching him in the chest. In the audio, Hill denies being responsible for breaking their son's arm and suggests that Espinal has been abusive. He also threatened Espinal, saying she should be "terrified" of him, too.

Hill was indefinitely suspended while the NFL investigated the situation, though the league eventually declined to punish Hill and the Chiefs cleared him to return to the team at the start of training camp.

As for the custody battle, Hill "says if the amount of time he spends with his son is left up to Espinal, it would be 'devastating' to his relationship with the boy," per TMZ. "He also says under their current arrangement, his role as an active parent 'is being disrupted at a critical point in the child's life.'"

Hill and Espinal are also battling for custody over their other two children, twins born earlier this year.
