Pacers' Victor Oladipo: 'I Think We're the Best Team in the East'

Indiana Pacers star Victor Oladipo is not afraid to say that he believes his squad is the team to beat in the Eastern Conference entering the 2019-20 season.

"I think we're the best team in the East," Oladipo said Friday, per Taylor Tannebaum of WTHR. "I don't care who added who, who is on whose team now. Call me crazy, then call me crazy. I really don't care."

The Eastern Conference, along with the entire NBA, appears up for grabs following an eventful offseason.

After winning their first-ever championship last season, the Toronto Raptors will attempt to remain among the contenders despite losing Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to free agency.

Four-time All-Star Jimmy Butler and veteran guard J.J. Redick moved on from the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason, but the team solidified its roster by adding five-time All-Star Al Horford and Josh Richardson while re-signing Tobias Harris.

The Boston Celtics, meanwhile, lost Horford and six-time All-Star Kyrie Irving in free agency. They did at least manage to soften the blow by signing three-time All-Star Kemba Walker.

The Brooklyn Nets had arguably the biggest offseason of any team by signing Irving, two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant and DeAndre Jordan. Durant, however, is not expected to play this upcoming season after rupturing his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals in June.

In Milwaukee, the Bucks will return much of the roster that won an NBA-best 60 games last season, including reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and All-Star Khris Middleton. Though it lost Malcolm Brogdon to Indiana, Milwaukee added veterans Kyle Korver, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews.

None of that matters to Oladipo.

Indiana has been one of the top teams in the East since Oladipo's arrival in 2017. The Pacers have finished fifth in the Eastern Conference while winning 48 games in each of the last two seasons.

Last season's 48 wins were an especially noteworthy accomplishment, given they played the final three months without Oladipo, who suffered a ruptured quad tendon on Jan. 23. The two-time All-Star has since been attempting to return for the upcoming season:

There is currently no timetable for his official return.

Without a healthy Oladipo, Indiana would not appear to be one of the favorites to come out of the East. However, when Oladipo is on the court, the Pacers have shown that they have the talent and chemistry to make some noise.

Indiana has not made it out of the first round since 2014, but that isn't stopping Oladipo from having his sights set high.
