Cowboys Rumors: Ezekiel Elliott Traveling to Cabo Amid Contract Holdout

Scott Polacek

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is reportedly getting some traveling done amidst his holdout from training camp.

Kevin Turner of 105.3 The Fan cited a source who said Elliott is going to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, while he holds out. Mike Leslie of WFAA confirmed the news but pointed out Cabo is not far from the team's training camp facility in Southern California.

That gives Elliott the option to arrive at camp relatively quickly if he and the team iron out his contract situation.

Elliott is reportedly not going to Mexico only for a vacation. According to TMZ Sports, he plans to train on the beach in preparation for the upcoming 2019 campaign, much like he did during his six-game suspension in 2017.

"We're told Zeke feels he had a good experience down there and thinks it's the best place for him to tune out the noise and focus on training until a new deal is reached," TMZ wrote.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported the Ohio State product is seeking a contract extension that would surpass the four-year, $57.5 million deal Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley signed last summer.

John Breech of CBS Sports pointed out such a deal would make Elliott the highest-paid running back in league history.

Elliott is under team control until 2021 on his rookie deal that is set to pay him approximately $3.9 million in 2019 and $9.1 million in 2020. He clearly feels he is worth more than that after reaching two Pro Bowls and leading the league in rushing yards in two of his first three seasons.

The 24-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, which is a welcome sign in an era of football where running backs are often devalued.

The Cowboys now have to decide whether they will honor his request for a new deal as he holds out and trains in Cabo with the Sept. 8 opener against the New York Giants approaching.
