Jets Rumors: TE Ryan Griffin Signs Contract After Chris Herndon's Suspension

The New York Jets reportedly have found a new tight end.

On Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the AFC East team signed Ryan Griffin. Garafolo suggested Griffin can compete for immediate playing time since tight end Chris Herndon is suspended for the season's opening four games.

Griffin played each of his first six seasons on the Houston Texans, but they released him after he was arrested in April for allegedly breaking a hotel window. James Palmer of NFL Network noted charges of vandalism and public intoxication were eventually dismissed.

Herndon was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, which left New York with a void after he tallied 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie last year.

Griffin gives it a veteran who can help it tread water until its promising young playmaker returns.

Houston selected Griffin in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft, and he was largely a secondary option during his time on the team. He finished with career-high marks across the board in 2016 with 50 catches for 442 yards and two touchdowns but has been unable to replicate those totals the past two years.

The Connecticut product had just 13 catches in 2017 and 24 catches last year.

Brian Costello of the New York Post noted he will compete for playing time with Daniel Brown, Eric Tomlinson and Trevon Wesco while Herndon is sidelined.
