Patriots News: Sony Michel, Demaryius Thomas to Start Training Camp on PUP List

Rob Goldberg

The New England Patriots are already dealing with multiple injuries heading into training camp.

Running back Sony Michel and receiver Demaryius Thomas will begin the year on the physically unable to perform list, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Michel has been dealing with a knee injury, while Thomas suffered a torn Achilles in Week 16 of last season.

There are high expectations for Michel this season after an impressive rookie year where he totaled 931 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. However, injuries were a problem for him throughout 2018, and it seems like it's once again an issue.

He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee this offseason, although he is reportedly progressing quickly, according to Michael Giardi of NFL Network. The team could remain cautious with him this preseason to make sure he is 100 percent in September.

Meanwhile, Thomas might be an even bigger question mark after his December Achilles injury that ended his year early.

As James Palmer of NFL Network noted when the receiver was released by the Houston Texans in February, Thomas returned from a torn Achilles in six months after his rookie year. Of course, this was nine years ago and the veteran has a lot more mileage on his body this time around.

The Patriots signed him in April to an incentive-laden contract, which would cost the team only $150,000 if he is released, per Spotrac.

The upside is there if the four-time Pro Bowler can get healthy, but New England has other options in Julian Edelman, Dontrelle Inman and rookie N'Keal Harry if Thomas remains out.
