Brett Favre: Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes 'Certainly Match Up to My Style'

Rob Goldberg

Both Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes have been compared to Brett Favre early in their careers due to their gunslinger style, and the Hall of Famer agrees with the assessment.

"There's no question that the sky is the limit for Baker," Favre told Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal. "And, yeah, I think his style of play, and I've heard the same thing about [Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick] Mahomes, and I agree with both, that their styles of play—if you had to pick a former player—would certainly match up to my style."

While this is lofty praise, both young players have accomplished quite a bit in the past year.

Mahomes was named MVP of the league in his first year as a starter last season, while Mayfield was the top rookie quarterback in 2018 after throwing for 3,725 yards and 27 touchdowns in 14 games.

Mayfield also helped turn around the Browns' fortunes, going 6-7 as a starter after the team went 0-16 the year before. The team heads into 2019 as a playoff contender and a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl.

Favre also spearheaded a similar turnaround for the Packers, taking over a 4-12 team before going 8-5 as a starter in his first year with the team. Green Bay made the playoffs the next season for the first time after a 10-year drought and then won the Super Bowl three years later.

Mahomes already had a lot of talent around him with the Chiefs, but he was a star last season while leading the NFL with 50 touchdown passes. Favre never even hit 40 in a season, although he did lead the league four different times while winning MVP three times.

Of course, the similarities between these three players go beyond just the box score or wins.

Mayfield and Mahomes have turned heads on the field thanks to their ability to move around the pocket and make plays that few others would be able to replicate, just like Favre did in his career.

"Playing [quarterback] the way I played and the way Baker and Mahomes play is they just kind of have that added little sixth sense," Favre said.

The question is whether the youngsters can keep up this level of play for 20 years like Favre did.
