Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins reuniting as teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers has apparently been a long time coming.   

According to The Athletic's Bill Oram, Cousins told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he, Davis and Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo "had multiple conversations" about reuniting. 

"He and AD had frequently discussed playing together again and that they didn't want it to end the first time," Oram added. 

Cousins, Davis and Rondo played together with the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2017-18 season, and the two big men also spent time together on the Pelicans in 2016-17. 

However, Cousins' tenure in New Orleans abruptly ended due to a ruptured Achilles suffered in January 2018. The Pelicans did not bring back the four-time All-Star at the end of the 2017-18 season, and he instead signed with the Golden State Warriors on a one-year contract.

Davis continued to play for the Pelicans until he was traded to the Lakers this offseason, and he and Cousins will again operate alongside one another in 2019-20 as the latter has agreed to a one-year deal with L.A. following a torn quad in the 2019 postseason. 

In November 2018, Davis foreshadowed that this would be the outcome. 

"[Cousins] will be a free agent next year," Davis told ESPN's Marc J. Spears. "Hopefully, down the line, we can reconnect." 

The two have always had a strong bond. Following Cousins' devastating Achilles injury, Davis wore his teammate's No. 0 jersey to start the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. Now, they can wear the same uniform again and compete to do something they couldn't achieve in New Orleans—win a championship. 

"I think we're a pretty tough big-man duo," Cousins said Wednesday, according to Harrison Faigen of SB Nation's Silver Screen & Roll. "That's part of the reason we wanted to become teammates again. We realized how much better we made one another, and how much we made the game easier for one another. So I think we both appreciate each other's presence. 

"To add LeBron James to the mix, I think his resume speaks for itself. Having one of the greatest players in the game added to [Davis and me]. It should be an exciting season." 

Injuries are the one thing that could derail what many in and around the Lakers organization expect to be an exciting season. Should everybody remain healthy, the Lakers can go as far as their frontcourt will take them.
