Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said the team should search for a new franchise QB if current starter Carson Wentz doesn't reach the NFC Championship Game in the next two years.

McNabb discussed Wentz on Saturday's edition of The Zach Gelb Show (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk) and explained why the pressure is beginning to rise on the 2016 second overall pick.

"I think in the next … two years or so he has to find a way to get … out of the second round of the playoffs," McNabb said, noting the recent success of former Eagles backup Nick Foles "proves … that some people can get into that offense and be very successful."

He added: "If [Wentz] can't get out of the second round, they should look to possibly draft another quarterback because you just don't know about his durability. Staying healthy is very key in this league."

McNabb led the Eagles to five NFC title games during his playing career, including four straight from 2001 through 2004. Philly made one Super Bowl appearance as part of that run, a 24-21 loss to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Philly cycled through several starters after his departure in 2010, including Michael Vick, Sam Bradford and Foles, before selecting Wentz.

The 26-year-old North Dakota State product struggled as a rookie, but he's shined when healthy over the past two seasons. He's posted a quarterback rating over 100 both years with a combined 54 touchdowns and 14 interceptions across 24 appearances.

Wentz ranked 12th in ESPN's Total QBR and 14th in Pro Football Focus' grades for the 2018 campaign.

Injuries have been a problem, though. He missed the Eagles' championship run at the end of the 2017 season because of a torn ACL and was sidelined for last year's playoff run with a back injury.

Foles, who left in free agency to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, filled the void on both occasions. He was named Super Bowl MVP following Philadelphia's thrilling 41-33 triumph over Brady and the Pats in Super Bowl LII.

With Foles now in Jacksonville, the onus falls squarely on Wentz to remain healthy and lead the Eagles to playoff success. He's yet to attempt a postseason pass.

The 2017 Pro Bowl selection said Monday his back is not yet fully healed, but he's prepared to leave the injury-prone label in the past once he returns to the field.

"I get it. I get it," Wentz told reporters. "I'm looking forward to putting those behind me. I understand it's a part of this league; it's a physical league and things happen. Some of those things are out of my control, and I look forward to putting that behind me."

It wouldn't be a surprise if the Eagles select a developmental quarterback in the late rounds of next week's draft, but Wentz is in no danger of losing his starting job at this point.
