David Price Warns of Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez Trades If Red Sox Don't Improve

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher David Price said the team's star-studded roster could see a massive overhaul if the reigning World Series champions don't turn things around following a 6-13 start to the 2019 season.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe provided comments Price made about the potential for blockbuster trades following the Red Sox's 5-3 loss to the rival New York Yankees on Wednesday night.

"If we don't start playing better, J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts, maybe myself, we could get traded," Price said. "We're, what, 30th in minor league systems?"

In February, Baseball America ranked Boston as having to worst group of prospects in MLB. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter also placed the Red Sox at the bottom of his farm system list to open 2019.

"We're dead last," Price said. "We don't play better, Mookie Betts will be traded, J.D. Martinez will be traded. It will be tough for a while here."

Although it's far too early for the Red Sox to consider selling off their All-Star level players, the hypothetical path to rebuilding the minor league rosters is blockbuster deals sending top assets in exchange for large packages of prized prospects.

Price remains confident those type of drastic measures won't ultimately be necessary, per Speier.

"We have too much talent in the clubhouse," he said. "We're a lot better than our record is. We're a lot better than what we played. And I still believe we will play better and our record will flip. [But] we've got to play better for a long time for that to happen, and we need that to happen now."

The Red Sox are set to embark on a crucial stretch. They play a three-game road series against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beginning Friday night before returning to Boston for a 10-game homestand against the Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics and Rays.

It will be early May by the time that stretch ends, and the Red Sox will want to see at least some progress back toward .500.

Betts is the most intriguing name if the Red Sox do get forced down that road, though. The reigning American League MVP is off to a sluggish start with a .676 OPS in 19 games and he can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season, his final year of arbitration.

In a perfect world for Boston, it gets back on track toward the playoffs this season and eventually signs Betts to a long-time contract extension. Price's comments showcase the dire nature of the alternative.
