Luke Harper Reveals He Has Requested Release from WWE Contract on Twitter

Joseph Zucker

WWE star Luke Harper announced Tuesday he has formally requested his release from the company.

"The past six years have been a simply amazing journey around the world and back with lifelong friends and family," he wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "I am proud of it all and proud to say I shared the ring with my co workers. This decision, as difficult as it was, feels right for myself and WWE."

In his most recent singles match, Harper defeated NXT star Dominik Dijakovic as part of the Worlds Collide event. The bout happened over WrestleMania 35 weekend and aired on WWE Network on Sunday.

It was the first time Harper had stepped inside a ring since November. Ahead of the show, he referenced his lengthy absence and revealed he could've returned far sooner.

Harper's announcement Tuesday isn't very surprising. He's one of many wrestlers without any real direction on WWE programming. With such a deep roster, it's inevitable for talented performers to be underutilized by the creative team.

Harper enjoyed success with The Wyatt Family and Bludgeon Brothers but couldn't build any momentum behind a singles run. He turned 39 in December as well, so he can't really afford to spin his wheels for another year or two in WWE in the hope of finally catching a break.

Once his exit is finalized, Harper should be able to land on his feet, either earning regular dates on the independent circuit or joining up with All Elite Wrestling.
