Women's basketball legend Cappie Pondexter announced her retirement Tuesday on Instagram. 

"I didn't expect to go out this way but I know God has something bigger in store," she wrote. "The everyday signs says so. Thank you to any and everyone involved in my early professional basketball career. A very Sad day for me but I'm ok with the words RETIRED."

Pondexter was a seven-time All-Star and made the All-WNBA First Team on three occasions. When the WNBA celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016, she was one of nine active stars included in the league's list of its 20 best players ever.

Between her scoring and playmaking ability, Pondexter is one of the most dynamic offensive players in WNBA history.

The 36-year-old retires having averaged 16.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists. She's fourth all time points (6,811), sixth in assists (1,578) and 17th in offensive win shares (31.29), according to Basketball Reference.

Pondexter enjoyed plenty of team success as well. She helped the Phoenix Mercury win WNBA titles in 2007 and 2009, winning Finals MVP in 2007. Her teams reached the playoffs in seven of her 13 seasons.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights retired her No. 25 jersey in December 2016, making her only the third player in program history to receive the honor. She played a starring role for Rutgers when it reached the Elite Eight in 2005 and Sweet 16 in 2006.

With Pondexter calling time on her professional career, the Hall of Fame will likely be her next stop.
