Josh Bailey Goal Gives Islanders Game 1 OT Win vs. Sidney Crosby, Penguins

Tyler Conway

The first 60 minutes couldn't decide a winner.

Josh Bailey made sure to do so in extra time.

The winger lit the lamp at the 4:39 mark in the overtime period, giving the New York Islanders a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series Wednesday at Nassau Coliseum.

The Penguins forced overtime with a Justin Schultz goal with under a minute-and-a-half remaining in regulation. Nick Leddy had scored a go-ahead goal for the Islanders earlier in the period.

Jordan Eberle and Brock Nelson scored first-period goals for the Islanders to give them a 2-1 lead at the intermission. Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin scored the first two goals for Pittsburgh.

Overtime Game 1 a Prelude to Thrilling Series

If Game 1 is any indication, we might have the best Round 1 series on our hands. The Penguins and Islanders both got out of the gate flying and played an attacking style that not only kept the goals churning but also had people on their feet throughout the 64-plus minutes.

The Islanders had an early goal wiped off the board from a challenge and then wasted almost no time before Eberle found the back of the net on assists from Anders Lee and Adam Pelech. Kessel's answer came only four minutes later and set the stage for a back-and-forth affair.

Robin Lehner wound up needing to make 41 saves for the Islanders to get the win, while Matt Murray stopped 29 for Pittsburgh.

There's plenty of reason to believe the exciting finishes will continue. Two of the team's four regular-season contests went into a shootout, and they split the season series.

There is also the whole changing-of-the-guard factor that's hanging over everything. The Islanders are a team that's built in recent years after missing the postseason in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

The Penguins are postseason mainstays but have an aging roster. They're two years removed from winning their second straight Stanley Cup but one from a frustrating second-round loss to the Washington Capitals. The Penguins also enter the playoffs after a frustrating regular season that saw injuries or inconsistent play put them in the third-seed line from the Metropolitan Division.

The Penguins and Islanders play Game 2 on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
