Sergey Kovalev Charged with Assault over Alleged June Attack on Woman

Kyle Newport

Boxer Sergey Kovalev has been charged with felony assault stemming from a June 9 arrest, according to TMZ Sports on Friday.

Kovalev was arrested in Big Bear, California, last summer after a woman told police the 35-year-old punched her in the face. He faces charges of assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury, which TMZ Sports notes carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

Kovalev has pleaded not guilty.

Per TMZ Sports, the woman said she rejected advances from Kovalev at a party. He and a friend allegedly followed the woman back to her cabin, where she was assaulted.

The woman said her injuries included a broken nose, a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck.

Kovalev is expected to return to court in March.

Kovalev is 32-3-1 in his boxing career, with all three defeats coming in his last five appearances. He lost a light heavyweight world title bout to Eleider Alvarez via seventh-round knockout in August, which came approximately two months after his arrest.
