The New York Yankees are "close" to trading starting pitcher Sonny Gray as of Thursday afternoon, according to Fancred's Jon Heyman. 

Heyman reported earlier in the day that the Cincinnati Reds, the San Francisco Giants, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Oakland Athletics, the San Diego Padres, the Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners are all among the teams that have inquired about Gray.

Those reports come after New York signed free-agent reliever Adam Ottavino to a three-year, $27 million contract on Thursday, per Heyman.

A 2011 first-round pick, Gray debuted with Oakland back in 2013 and quickly became one of the top up-and-coming pitchers in all of baseball. He was named to the American League All-Star team in his second full season in 2015, finishing third in AL Cy Young voting following a season in which he went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA in 31 starts.

He spent the first four-plus years of his career with the A's before being acquired by the Yankees in a 2017 deadline deal. And while that trade was made in an effort to bring a front-of-the-rotation arm to the Bronx, the right-hander's time in pinstripes hasn't been smooth.

Gray went 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 11 starts following the trade in 2017 and went 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA (allowing five runs, four earned, in 8.1 innings) over the course of two postseason starts. This past season, he went 11-9 with a 4.90 ERA in 30 appearances, including 23 starts. He was demoted to the bullpen in August after posting a 5.56 ERA in 21 starts.

He was not a part of the Yankees' postseason roster.

Gray is just 29 years old, so even though he endured a rough 2018 campaign, there has been no shortage of interest in him around the league.

If the Yankees do, in fact, trade Gray, it would mark just their latest transaction in what has been a busy offseason. This winter, they have acquired Ottavino, starting pitcher James Paxton, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and infielder D.J. LeMahieu while re-signing C.C. Sabathia, Brett Gardner, Zach Britton and J.A. Happ.
