Wayne Ellington's future in Miami is up in the air.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Ellington "has had conversations with Heat officials regarding his limited role and his future with the team" and Miami is "aware that Ellington wants to play" and "conveyed to Ellington's camp that it values [him]" but "no promises were made." 

Jackson added that "Ellington told the Miami Herald previously that he would not rule out going to Heat management and asking to trade him to a team where he can play more."

Ellington, 31, is averaging just 8.3 PPG this season in 22 minutes per contest, shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from three. He's only appeared in 21 games, however, and has been hit with the dreaded "Did Not Play—Coach's Decision" designation in nine of Miami's last 10 games.

"It's been really hard," Ellington told Shandel Richardson of The Athletic. "I've felt all different types of emotions: Hurt, anger, all the way down the line. Upset. All that kind of stuff. I'm a warrior, though. I'm going to keep on fighting, keep battling. That's what I do."

The issue for Ellington in Miami is that the team has solid depth on the wing, with players like Josh Richardson, Dwyane Wade, Justise Winslow, Tyler Johnson, Tyler McGruder, Derrick Jones Jr. and Dion Waiters all battling for playing time.

"I have great empathy for the guys who are not playing the minutes that they would like or deserve in many cases," head coach Erik Spoelstra said, per Richardson. "I have great empathy for Wayne. I don't have a great answer for it, other than we've found some things that have been good. It's not an indictment on anybody. I can't play everybody."

Ellington, however, has been the odd man out more often than not lately. Publicly, he's tried to keep a positive attitude.

But behind closed doors, it would appear as though he's ready for a change of scenery. And given his ability from beyond the arc—he's a career 38 percent three-point shooter—it's likely plenty of teams would have interest in Ellington, either as a trade target or in the buyout market.
