The Denver Broncos hired Rich Scangarello as their offensive coordinator, the team announced Wednesday. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the move.

Scangarello spent the last two years as the San Francisco 49ers' quarterbacks coach. He takes over for Bill Musgrave, who was not retained by the Broncos after they named Vic Fangio the new head coach.

Gary Kubiak, who coached the Broncos for two seasons and led them to a Super Bowl in 2015, had been in the running for the offensive coordinator job. However, the Denver Post's Ryan O'Halloran and Kyle Fredrickson reported Kubiak and Fangio had philosophical differences they couldn't bridge.

Given his specialization, Scangarello is a good fit for Denver. He'll help address what has been one of the team's biggest issues.

Broncos fans need only to look at Scangarello's work this past season to see the impact of his coaching. A torn ACL limited Jimmy Garoppolo to three games. In his place, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard combined to throw for 3,529 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala detailed further why Scangarello could prove to be a shrewd hire:

"But the boxes Scangarello, 46, does check instilled more hope than hesitance by the Broncos. The incorporation of more college concepts into an NFL offense in desperate need of an update is a necessity. The bulk of Scangarello's coaching experience has been at the college level.

"The experience in Kyle Shanahan's system, which is derived from Mike Shanahan's system and has served as a base for the Broncos for years, offers continuity."

Case Keenum will likely see out the remainder of his two-year, $36 million deal with Denver. The team would save $11 million but eat $10 million in dead money if it were to release him at any point in the offseason, per Over the Cap.

Regardless of whether Keenum remains the starter, developing Keenum's successor will likely be one of Scangarello's top tasks.

Between getting a new head coach and offensive coordinator, now is the perfect time to identify a young quarterback who can be the long-term option. In his most recent mock draft, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller projected the Broncos to select Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the 10th overall pick.
