Kyler Murray Apologizes for Using Homophobic Slurs in Old Tweets

Timothy Rapp

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray apologized Sunday morning after homophobic tweets from 2012 resurfaced online following his announcement as the Heisman Trophy winner Saturday night.

The 21-year-old said sorry via Twitter:

According to Scott Gleeson of USA Today: "When Murray was 15 years old, he tweeted at his friends (via his since-verified Twitter account) using an anti-gay slur to defame them. As of early Sunday morning, four offensive tweets using the slur remained active on his account but have since been deleted."

Murray was the ninth overall selection by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB draft and is set to play baseball going forward. But he certainly made his mark on the football world in his final season with Oklahoma, throwing for 4,053 yards, 40 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 892 yards and 11 scores on the ground.

Neither Oakland or Oklahoma has commented on the matter.

Murray will close out his college football career in the College Football Playoff, with a semifinal matchup against Alabama and potentially a date with either Clemson or Notre Dame in the championship if the Sooners knock off the Crimson Tide.

In the interim, however, Murray became the latest high-profile athlete to have his old tweets circulated around the internet, as Gleeson wrote:

"The Milwaukee Brewers' Josh Hader had racist, homophobic and misogynistic tweets resurface from when he was 17 years old this past summer. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen saw racist tweets resurface from his teenage years ahead of the NFL draft. And Villanova Final Four Most Outstanding Player Donte DiVincenzo had a profane tweet with racist rap lyrics surface on the Internet right after he helped the Wildcats win a national title."
