Ryan Tannehill will start for the Miami Dolphins in Week 12's game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post.

Tannehill, 30, has missed the past five games while recovering from a right shoulder injury but returned to practice Tuesday.

"He's been waiting for this week to come for a while," head coach Adam Gase said of Tannehill, per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.  

With Tannehill out of action, the Dolphins went 2-3 as Brock Osweiler filled in at quarterback. Osweiler has completed 63.5 percent of his passes this season, throwing for 1,247 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions.    

Tannehill is an upgrade, though the stats might suggest otherwise. He threw for a mediocre 972 yards, eight scores and five interceptions in five games to start the campaign, completing 65.9 percent of his passes.

The team is sitting at 5-5 and remains in a battle for the AFC's second wild-card spot, alongside the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans, all 5-5 as well.

If the Dolphins are unable to reach the postseason for the ninth time in the past 10 years, however, the Gase-Tannehill pairing could be on the hot seat. Miami reached the postseason in Gase's first season in 2016, losing in the Wild Card Round, though Tannehill missed the final three games of that season and the playoffs with an ACL injury. 

He opted against surgery before eventually going under the knife in August 2017. He missed all of last season and has played in just five of Miami's last 30 games. 

Tannehill is under contract through the 2020 season. But he doesn't have a prohibitive amount of guaranteed money remaining on his contract, and the Dolphins could cut ties without incurring an unreasonable hit to their cap, depending upon how they handled the release.

If Tannehill plays poorly in his return or gets injured once again, it should be a consideration at the least.
