Josh Allen Doesn't Need Elbow Surgery 'At This Point,' Derek Anderson to Start

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced Wednesday that recently signed quarterback Derek Anderson will start over Nathan Peterman in Sunday's Week 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts while starter Josh Allen recovers from an elbow injury.

McDermott added there's a "chance" Allen, who's listed as week-to-week with no immediate plans for surgery, returns during the 2018 NFL season, but he didn't want to make any "crystal ball" predictions about the rookie's future availability, per Joe Buscaglia of WKBW.

The 22-year-old University of Wyoming product was injured during the Bills' 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. ESPN's Dianna Russini reported "there is concern he will miss weeks."

Allen, the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, has struggled throughout his debut campaign. He's completed just 54 percent of his throws for 832 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions across six appearances. He added 155 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.

Meanwhile, Peterman has been an unmitigated disaster since Buffalo selected him in the fifth round of last year's draft.

He threw five interceptions in his first career start last November against the Los Angeles Chargers, and things haven't improved much from there. He's tallied three TDs and nine picks with a 44.3 completion rate in six games. The Texans scored the winning touchdown on a pick-six late in Sunday's contest.

So the Bills will turn to Anderson, who was only signed last Tuesday, to take over the offense.

The 35-year-old journeyman is familiar to McDermott after spending six years together with the Carolina Panthers starting in 2011. He's another less-than-inspiring option, however, after compiling 60 touchdowns and 60 interceptions in 76 career games.

Therefore, the onus will likely once again fall on the shoulders of Buffalo's defense, which ranks third in yards allowed per game so far in 2018, against the Colts.
