U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka was named the 2018 PGA Tour Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Koepka edged Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose and Justin Thomas in voting among golfers who played at least 15 FedEx Cup events during the 2017-18 season.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan released a statement about the award:

"On behalf of the PGA Tour, our congratulations to Brooks Koepka on being voted PGA Tour Player of the Year by his peers. Brooks has brought a new brand of athleticism to the PGA Tour, and we saw the results this year with his historic season at the major championships and a top-10 finish in the FedEx Cup. These feats were accomplished despite missing significant time due to injury, a testament to his work ethic and perseverance throughout the season."

Koepka sat out over three months of action from early January through late April because of a wrist injury. The ailment forced him to miss the 2018 Masters.

The 28-year-old Florida native made up for lost time, winning two of the year's final three major tournaments to bring his career total to three after he captured his first major at the 2017 U.S. Open.

He outlasted the field at Shinnecock Hills in mid-June as his one-over 281 was enough to beat Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke to win his second straight U.S. Open. He then held off a late charge by Tiger Woods in August to win the PGA Championship by two shots at Bellerive Country Club.

"When I look at what I've done in the past two months, it's incredible," Koepka told reporters after he won the PGA. "Looking where I was, sitting on my couch watching the Masters, and to think I would do this, I would've laughed at you and told you there was no way, no chance."

Along with the two major titles, his season featured four other top-10 finishes and 15 made cuts in 17 starts. He finished ninth in the final FedEx Cup standings despite playing the fewest events of any player inside the top 50.

Koepka was previously named the European Tour's Rookie of the Year in 2014.
