Report: Ohio State Transfer Joe Burrow Named LSU Starting QB over Myles Brennan

Joseph Zucker

Joe Burrow won the competition to be the LSU Tigers' starting quarterback for the start of the 2018 college football season, Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger reported Monday.

Burrow beat out sophomore Myles Brennan for the job. According to Dellenger, the Tigers could redshirt Brennan for the upcoming campaign if Burrow, who transferred to LSU after graduating from Ohio State, becomes established in the role.

LSU will give Brennan an opportunity to play at some point before deciding whether to limit him to no more than four games in order to use a redshirt.

Dellenger added that Burrow wasn't head and shoulders above Brennan when head coach Ed Orgeron made the final decision:

Burrow was stuck behind J.T. Barrett during his Ohio State career, so he didn't get much meaningful action. He threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns in 10 appearances.

Brennan was the No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He went 14-of-24 for 182 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions as a true freshman for LSU.

"It's been so close that it will not be obvious," Orgeron said last week of the team's quarterback battle, per the Lafayette Daily Advertiser's Glenn Guilbeau. "We can go with either quarterback, and we wouldn't be wrong. Both of them have been fantastic. Both of them have been practicing with the first team. But if one is named the starter on Sunday, obviously, he'll take all the first-team reps."

Going with Burrow makes sense for the No. 25 Tigers, at least for the first few weeks.

He has a slight experience edge on Brennan, which could be important with LSU opening the regular season Sept. 2 at AT&T Stadium against the eighth-ranked Miami Hurricanes. The team also goes on the road Sept. 15 against the No. 9 Auburn Tigers.

Burrow was himself a blue-chip recruit coming out of high school. He placed eighth among dual-threat quarterbacks in 2015, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

Whether it's Burrow or Brennan, playing two Top 10 opponents in the first three games of the season should allow Orgeron to have a good idea about who will be the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the year.
