Bryson DeChambeau cruised to victory in The Northern Trust at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey.

DeChambeau finished the tournament at 18 under, four shots better than Tony Finau. Billy Horschel and Cameron Smith tied for third at 13 under.

The Northern Trust was the first leg of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs. The Dell Technologies Championship is next up, with the tournament teeing off Friday at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts.

The top 100 golfers from the FedEx standings will be eligible to compete in the event, with the field trimmed to 70 by the time all is said and done in Norton.

DeChambeau climbs to the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings with Sunday's win. While the 24-year-old has plenty of work ahead to remain there, banking those points early gives him an edge on the competition.

Speaking with CBS Sports' Amanda Balionis after the tournament, DeChambeau highlighted consistency as his top priority over the remainder of the playoffs, via GOLFonCBS:

Entering the final round, DeChambeau held a four-stroke lead over Keegan Bradley. That buffer meant he wouldn't need to go above and beyond to collect his second PGA Tour win of the season.

He opened the round with birdies on his first two holes before falling back to even par with bogeys on Nos. 3 and 9. Back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes provided DeChambeau with additional breathing room:

According to the PGA Tour's official site, DeChambeau missed just two greens in regulation Sunday, which was a trend for him throughout the tournament. He reached 81.9 percent of the greens in regulation, tied for first place.

DeChambeau's eight-under 63 in the third round helped him climb into first place, but he was excellent from start to finish at Ridgewood. He had just six total bogeys over the four days.

Beyond just the boost DeChambeau receives in the FedEx Cup standings, winning The Northern Trust could be huge in terms of securing a spot on the United States' Ryder Cup team. U.S. captain Jim Furyk can't overlook him now:

It would be a stretch to say Sunday's victory was a star-making moment for DeChambeau because his star was already on the rise. PGA Tour Digital's Sean Martin put his career in perspective, though, illustrating how few golfers can match his achievements to date:

Making a run at the FedEx Cup title and representing the United States at the Ryder Cup would provide DeChambeau with a nice springboard to what could be a massive 2019 season.
