Nabil Fekir doesn't know why a transfer from Lyon to Liverpool failed to go through this summer.
The France international has come to terms with not moving to Anfield, but he believes only the Reds have the answers for why a deal didn't happen.
Fekir spoke about the doomed move after featuring in Lyon's Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg on Friday, per Liam Prenderville of the Daily Mirror: "I heard a lot of things. The real reason? Only Liverpool know. These things happen. It's just how it is. We have to move on. It's well in the past now. I have totally come to terms with the failed transfer to Liverpool."
Fekir's words come after a protracted summer saga, during which Liverpool and Lyon were said to have agreed a £53 million deal for the gifted attacking midfielder.
However, the mooted deal collapsed. Simon Mullock of the Sunday Mirror reported the Reds balked at paying Lyon's asking price after a medical revealed worrying news about the state of Fekir's knee.
However, Mullock also noted how French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet denied Fekir had failed his medical. Whatever the reason, the 25-year-old's switch didn't happen, leaving the temperament of Lyon's star player in question.
Coach Bruno Genesio attempted to quell any such concerns when he discussed Fekir's mood recently, per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo:
"It is never easy accepting this kind of situation, when you are very near to signing for a club where you want to go, where you want to reach another level and to give a boost to your career. But it could have been worse for him. He is at Lyon, at a strong club, he is captain of a team who plays in the Champions League."
While the player appears to have been left somewhat puzzled and disappointed, Liverpool should also bemoan missing out on somebody of Fekir's talent. The Reds have an enviable contingent of attacking options, led by forwards Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
Yet even a trio this prolific would welcome the creative impetus Fekir could provide, particularly after Liverpool lost ample amounts of flair and vision when Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona back in January.
Naby Keita arrived this summer, but the former RB Leipzig talisman is more of a box-to-box workhorse than a natural creator.
By contrast, manufacturing chances is arguably the core of Fekir's game:
Liverpool haven't been shy about splashing the cash on manager Jurgen Klopp's watch, so they could well revisit the idea of signing Fekir. However, the player's implied accusation the Reds are to blame for this summer's failure could burn bridges between Liverpool and Lyon.
